I finally got my reply from Tanfoglio and it’s not very encouraging. Here it is…

thanks for the message.
We apologize for the late reply, but we have several problems with the e-mail server.

The pistol with serial number H36### is not in our internal register; it could be in the old papers registers that are kept by the Police Department or it was a pistol composed by unfinished components sold to companies that at that time assembled the pistols.
Unfortunately we cannot help you and we don’t think that the today components/parts can work properly and in safety with that pistols due to tolerances, shapes, materials and designs.
Even the old TZ-75 model parts are not compatible at 70-80% with today models especially the main components (barrel, frame and slide).

Thank You

So…there that is. So I guess everything is based on our guess work at this point.
Based on my continued research/ reading I’ve come to believe my particular pistol is more likely a F.I.E. TA-90 combat. If I’m correct in my understanding, these were the first pistols brought in by F.I.E. from Tanfoglio. Standard models had the slide mounted safety, but the “combat” model had the frame mounted safety. If I am mistaken please chime in with the correct information. At this point the people on this and other forums are my only source of info and history on this pistol.

What about this barrel? https://www.gunbroker.com/item/1050864145
I am in contact with him. There is a glimmer of hope with one of his barrels. Looks like it might fit. Waiting for reply.

I have a new barrel on the way.
But, I did do a complete deep cleaning on the original barrel and took it to the range. I set down at the bench and fired slow from a stand. Distance was only 12 yards, but the results were encouraging. Maybe this old, pitted barrel isn’t dead yet.

Not bad at all! I’d say its doing pretty well, there are some new pistols that can’t do that well.

I would say that the old Barrel is doing quite well, in spite of it's condition.  8)  :)

The seller of the barrel said he also has an adjustable site that would fit. I’m not sure I would want to go that route with this old gun. I certainly can drift the rear side enough to center up the groups. I would just have to compensate for the low impact.

You're getting to the point where you are putting a $10 saddle on a $5 horse...  Unless it's a hand me down from grandpa or some special collector piece, you have to be careful not to get too deep into these projects... (ask me how I know).

Not looking to put any more into this one. A decent barrel is enough.
