712 shotguns blow up?
« on: May 04, 2006, 09:52:43 AM »
I was advised of an online merchant selling the 712 for $299 and was thinking about getting one. I came here to see the reviews and I see the posting in the shotgun forum says not to buy them because he has seen 2 "blown up" This was a few days ago and no one has followed up the post with any other information. Could someone from CZ comment on this?

            Thanks

I hate to hijack your thread, but if you don't mind letting me know who has the 712 for 299 I would really appreciate it. I have been looking for one and they seem to be going for more than that used.

I guess you are interested in buying one so do you think the blowing up thing is just nonsense?

By the way I have no affiliation with this company so purchase from them at your own risk.

The story of them blowing up may or may not be true, but even if it is true it seems to be isolated. I feel that if it was a real problem and widespread you would see many more people posting about this issue and probably a recall from CZ.

Also thanks for the link. I will probably order from them today, I will update if I have any problems with them or not.

I posted this on another thread but after seeing you so determined to buy a 712 I just wanted to make sure you make your decision after you have my personal testimony:

            Quote:
Mine blew up because of a broken firing pin. The pin snapped and remained stuck in forward position. When I reloaded, the shotshell was pushed towards the chamber not by the face of the bolt but by the firing pin. The result was the shotshell went kaboom before entering the chamber, the shotgun was totaled, and my hand was burned and sore.
I wonder if CZ have the intention to address this problem by issuing a recall fo replacing the firing pins. I will write them an email. If they are not willing to do anything about this situation I will send them back the 712 magnum they sent me as a replacement after my first 712 blew up.
After hearing how many similar incidents happened, I simplly cannot trust this brand anymore.

            End quote

Please do not take this as a personal grudge against CZ.
I own two CZ rifles and four CZ pistols and all of them are among my favorite firearms. I'm a CZ fan because they make good, reliable, excellent designed firearms and they sell them at a fair price.
However, the CZ semiautos made in Turkey by Huglu are not worthy of the CZ name. It's not only me who had this unpleasant incident, but also a friend of mine who is a member of the FFF Boards and a gunsmith /gunshop employee had two totaled 712 coming in his shop in only one week. This is not an isolated incident, nor a coincidence anymore.

As I already stated, all I want is for CZ to come forward and address this problem. I would really love to keep my 712 Magnum because I love the way it looks and the way it shoots. But I just don't feel comfortable anymore mounting that gun close to my face after knowing my bad experience is not an isolated incident.

Yes they have been known to blow up.  My 712 did in fact blow up just as described.  Broken firing pin.  Scared the you know what outta me.  Luckily, I was wearing a shooting glove and did not get more than a sore hand and no bystanders were injured.  There was one other  person at my trap club that had the same thing happen about two weeks earlier.  I had the dealer check and both had serial numbers within 2000 numbers.  Maybe a bad batch of firing pins.  I'd be happy to share the pictures.  Anyway, I'm swearing off semi-autos and going to break actions.  I think CZ makes a decent break action, feels nice anyway.  Anybody shooting a CZ break action?

I've been wondering about this..so much so that I haven't used my 712 since i found out about it... would be curious about your s/n so as to compare it to mine.

also, talked to some cz sales reps at the raahagues shooting fair in Corona Ca last weekend.  They said that they do not know of any specific batch of bad ones or any test to determine if you have a bad one, but the western states sales rep did tell me that he has gotten about one return per state and two from northern Ca.  I didn't ask him how many were sold in total in his region, but his statement was that CZ doesn't have a Replacement pin or any recall action at this time.

They still claim that autoloader production was ceased to concentrate on break orders and that the failures happened after the decision was made....

Does anyone have any other information on this? I am considering buying a 712 but came across this thread and must admit I don't want to buy something that could blowup in my face or hands? Any followup, numbers, recall information?  Additionally, does anyone know where I can get a copy of or download the CZ712 user manual?

            Thank you.

Looks like it was just B.S. as no one followed up with more facts or any pics.

I have heard nothing...of course CZ-USA is still choosing to not import this model at this time (which bothers me a little bit).

I have loaned out the 712 a couple of times to people at the range who had a problem with their gun in the middle of a match and still..people kind of like it, especially knowing that it is inexpensive.  I guess I'm going to find out how long it lasts.

From what I understand, it is not that they choose not to import them at this time, but that the over/under and side-by-sides are so popular that the factory halted production of the semi autos as to focus all their energy on the break-opens.
