I am in the process of purchasing a new CZ PO1 (should have it monday) and I am wondering about tactical training schools.

I live in Iowa, but would consider one in Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, or Missouri depending on the quality.

There are many listed, but almost no independent reviews, and seemingly no universal certification or quality control system.

Here are my goals.

1) Defense
2) Competition shooting ( I realize this would mean getting a different pistol) as a hobby for my dad and I to share. (we already do some shotgun targets for fun)

One additional thing of note.  After finishing my MBA I would be applying to different federal law enforcement agencies for white collar crime.  Stock traders, fraud, money laundering etc.  So whatever I learn should not be in conflict with what I will learn later.

Sorrry for the long post, but I think other are interested in where to get quality training and the different schools of thought on defensive, vs competition etc.

Thanks

For great training in your area, contact Steve Silverman.  His site is www.f-r-i.com  If you can fine a range and put together a few students, Steve will come to you.  He is one of the finest defensive handgun instructors I've had the pleasure to work with.  Prices are very reasonable and you get more than your money's worth.  You may mention that I recommend him, if you like...

Both of these are in Illinois. I have heard good comments about the first link. I have heard good comments on John Farnam's classes which are hosted by the second link. I recommend Massad Ayoob's Judicial Use of Deadly Force class which has also been hosted by the second link.

Just as important as learning to handle and shoot a firearm well is learning WHEN to shoot and WHAT to do and say after a shooting.

If you are willing to secure a range and enough people for a class, I highly recommend www.marksmans.com. Jim's forte is diagnosing a shooter's problems and getting them corrected. Even if you don't attend Jim's classes, I would recommend buying his books (handgun, shotgun, urban carbine) for the firearms you shoot.

WOW.  its ironic that these types of schools can exist in a state with so many anti-gun nazis.  as you know, there is no ccw in illinois.  you would think they would send the gestapo storm troopers to shut these schools down immediately.

as a former illinois resident, i hope that some more liberal laws are on the way.

Earnest is one great instructor for exactly what you are looking for. He has trained some of the finest. He will also specifically teach you how to master the DA first pull and transition to SA. He can teach both defensive and competition and he does know the difference.

He also travels if you have a range and students. The price depends on the number of students.

Since the last election in Illinois went to a Democratic Sweep, and the incoming State Administration has an extreme anti-gun record, the outlook for Gun Law Reform in Illinois is extremely bleak at best.  If anything, things will probably get worse!  I would leave Illinois, were it not for family responsibilities I currently have, but I will leave ASAP.  Perhaps I will have to stash some of my weapons in my sister's basement, in neighboring Wisconsin, if things get too rough!

Also, if you are in or close to the Rockford, Illinois area, you might want to check out my clubs range.  It is one of the best ranges available.  See link below.
