Vz 58 Deal or No Deal???
« on: September 20, 2008, 09:41:50 PM »
Found a sweet Vz 58 for under $600, just one problem.  This is the low-cap version with 2) 10 round plastic magazines.  Sure, it would be nice to have the 30 rounder, but is there any other difference between this and the 30rd version CZ-USA is advertising?

Also, how old would this model be in 10rd?  It is my understanding that the receiver can be milled out to support the 30rd mags, but is that a pain to do?

Want to "pull the trigger" on this one and looking for some guidance.  New to the forum too!

Hi! First, no, not the one brought in by CZ-USA. Mags are available, but the cost of having it milled out and modified for hi cap mags, as well as getting all the required compliance parts for 922(r), http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/waisidx_08/27cfr478_08.html  , would make it a non starter compared to the CZ offering.
I would seriously reccomend going for the CZ-USA version, more money, but worth it, with no expensive alterations needed. :)

Understand that the mods would be more expensive than the CZ-USA version.  But if I was OK with the 10 round mags, are there other differences?  I can get 10rd mags for this rifle for $13 each.  So, it becomes a question of whether the almost $300 difference is worth one 30rd magazine.  If the reliability and the accuracy are the same, I would rather buy more 10 round magazines.

You know, people are so stuck on "looks", they completely forget the 10 round neutered thing will still put lead on target just like the one that 'looks' like a military gun.  As has been pointed out, mags are cheaper, too.

Best part: NO 922r worries   ;D

Yeah, the look with the 30 round mag looks cool, but it really isn't that practical.  Talking with TGI, the one I have on order is the original import with no modifications.  I don't think some buyers realize that they are getting a rifle that has been milled out here and a 30 round mag added.  Also, once milled, you cannot go back to the 10 round magazine.  If you are in an area that may make possessing high capacity (which is specified as larger than 10 rounds) magazines illegal, then you will have a REAL problem.  I will always be able to buy the 10 round mags, but if the 2007 or 2008 version of the AW ban becomes law (a real possibility), then you won't be able to replace or add 30 round magazines.  Seems to me, that the low-cap version MAY be the better purchase for a lot of reasons.  My 2 cents.

The antis don't care how many rounds it holds.

They don't want any guns in civilian hands.

It's not a matter of being stuck on looks, or a cool factor. It's is the way the rifle was built in the first place. It naturally takes a 30 round magazine. It is after all based on a military rifle. What I think would be nice is if CZ sold 5, 10, or 30 round accessory mags. I never fully load my magazines while at the gun range anyway. The same folks that deem a 30 round magazine as evil would ban 10 round magazines given the opportunity. They'd ban guns as well if they thought they could pull it off.
