Pre B 75 couple of ID type questions
« on: February 19, 2009, 03:10:19 AM »
New to CZ Forum.  I have an '84 marked pistol.  Is the marking to the left of the "84" in the oval a Czech proof mark?  The mark on my gun is not well done but thru a glass looks kinda "dragon/gryphonish". Also there is no red in the safety detent.  Is that correct or is it missing? Does the nickname "waffle" grips refer to those black plastic ones with cross-ways raised grooves separated by a "dotted" inlet panel.?  Thanks in advance for anyone's info.

The color in the safe/off safe may have been worn off.  In my collection, I have some of the earlier pistols with a white dot, others with a red dot.

The grips you describe as the "waffle" grips are the earliest grips that I have been able to find.  They look like they came out of a waffle iron like you would have for breakfast.  I was fortunate enough to find a set of "waffle" grips at a gun show for $15 (I felt like I stole them, the seller was happy to sell them).

As for that creature proof mark, its the Czech lion. There should also be one on your triggerguard on the right side, and before the serial number on your barrel.

Thanks fellas. Yes there is a similiar lion proof mark on the trigger guard and barrel. Wow, the Czechs could'a used some help with their stamping designs.  This gun came with a couple 15round mags with Pachmyr base pads.  I'm assuming those are not original to the gun but I'm wondering when they were made.  Any thoughts? What's the latest buzz on the high-gloss enamel finish? I'm torn between keeping it original (have orange & black box) and stripping it and re-finishing it.  I'm gonna keep shooting it and the enamel, although pristine, is not my favorite finsih. Any opinions?

If you're gonna shoot it, you'll probably end up having to refinish the gun at some point. The 80s enamel finish is bar none the worst finish CZ has ever used on their firearms, and is vastly inferior to the current black polycoat. The enamel is infamous for flaking off very fast, and I can't imagine it got any better with age. Shame too, because all 80s CZ are awesome looking guns otherwise.

I prefer the classic blue steel look, but if you do want to refinish it, take a gander at Duracoat's product line.
