Is the CZ-75/85 a better weapon than a SP-01
« on: March 16, 2009, 08:01:40 PM »
I am having to make a $500+ decsion here folks.  First all I like the way the CZ-75/85 feels in my fairly small hands. I have also shot one on a few occasions as well. I was looking to buy one until I heard about the SP-01.
Now as far as ownership of CZ's the only one I have now is a P-01 and I LOVE IT. The feel is good about he same as a 75/85.
Reading more on the stats of the SP01, YEs it is a bigger gun, I am concerned about the grip size.

For those of you who have the 75or85  how do they feel compared to the SP01?
Questions:

Is the trigger reach the same on the SP01?

Is the grip thicker than a 75/85 or even a P-01?

Does the 4 extra ounces of the SP-01 really noticable?

If any of you have a 75/85 or a P-01 I need your imput regarding the grip size and trigger reach.
If you can spare any time and do some measurments for me that would be great.

There are no dealers whenre I live within a 100 mile radius that carry a SP-01 and only 2 that I know have a 75 and a 85 in stock and that it for CZ's.   My dealer has a PHANTOM and it feels really good, but I am wanting the metal SP-01 no plastic.

I would like to hear your advice---is the SP-01 the one I need or should I just go with a CZ-75/85.

Still havent got to see a metsl  SP-01 yet, let alone hold one.

What are you going to use the gun for?

I own a SP-01 and I've handled my cousin's 75.  I felt no discernible difference in grip size, but the SP01 ergos did feel a little better for me.  Not having to do with size but instead the shape of the grip.  I have smallish hands too.

I am a newbie, so take that into consideration when reading my response.  I have shot the CZ75 at the local range a number of times and loved it.  Then I got a chance to try my friend's SP01 and really fell in love with it.  For me, it shot the same, if not better.  I have big hands, so the grip on the SP01 felt really good.  Final decision came down to I like the fact that the SP01 has the rail if I should want a tac light or laser in the future.  I'm going to use it mostly at the range, probably try to get into some local competitions.  I plan on getting my CWP, but mostly just to have it, carry it here and there.  Not planning on carrying it all the time, so the weight/length wasn't that big of a concern.  Just my two cents.  By the way, I ordered my SP01 from Angus on Friday ( around 5pm ), added in "custom work" - respring, and F/O front sight...I just got the email confirmation that it shipped.  Should be at my FFL on Thursday, can't beat that!

Just my two cents..

The SP-01 use--or at least mine will be a general all around purpose pistol. Target shooting, tactical shooting, self defense I want a durable reliable weapon, and something I can depend on without a doubt, in fact something I can count my life on if necessary. I want something that feels comfortable in my hand, something that has excellent accuracy, a simple design, simple takedown in the field, and something I can take to any fairly competant gunsmith to have work done on it if its something I cant fix. I want it to come from a good company with excellent customer service, with parts avaialbility and support.

You can field strip a SP-01 down in 10 seconds, back together in the same. The parts are machined to close tolerances -no slop- but they fall, slide and press right back into one another.

The internal design looks straightforward to me, no great mysteries that a decent smith could not figure out.

For parts, there are links on this website.

Your requirements are somewhat contradictory as match/target shooting and CCW/self defense usually call for differently sized handguns.

It is a good thing your requirements don't include owning a handgun that 'everyone else' uses...because the CZ brand ain't that well known in North America - well, not yet.

I've shot both and own the SP-01 Tactical. The grip ergos are great in 'my
hand, and I too have non-ham sized mitts. - lol

For concealed carry I'd opt for one of my .380s or get an XD-M, not because of CZ reliability, far from it, but more just because the thing weighs a ton and could be a PIA to carry all day long. My 1911A1 weighs 39oz empty, the SP-01 about the same. Either with a full magazine 'will' make your sweat pants droop some -lol - but I would without question trust my life to either.

The SP01 has the same trigger reach as the P01 and all have the same frame thickness, varying only with grips.  My wife is getting started with USPSA using a SP01 and she's 5'2" / 110 lbs.

The standard 75/85B models don't have the same grip dimensions or beavertail, which effectively makes the trigger reach a little longer, not to mention the different trigger which also is a longer reach as compared the the P01/SP01 models.

I had to put an 85 Combat trigger in my SP01 to increase the trigger reach a bit.

Hopes this helps with your original questions.

I have both a 75B stainless and an SP01 Tactical.  My hands are on the smallish side as well.  I can feel that the SP01 has a little tiny bit less of a trigger reach than the 75B.  I think this is becuase of the extra relief cut under the trigger guard where it joins the front strap.  The extra weight of the SP01 really helps it in the range.  Other than these 2 items, I think they pretty much the same.

Beeeeautiful!  Where did you get those grips, especially the half-checker cocobolos?  I just ordered an SP01 today from Angus with the in-house full checkers from CZ.  I hope they look half as good as yours.  The current half-checkers from CZ have the CZ logo in the checkered area.

I own two CZ75 s and a SP-01. They are  wonderful guns but I have to admit that I prefer the feel of the SP-01. The extra weight is a plus for sight recovery when firing rapid fire. I have somewhat large hands, and the extra beavertail on the SP-01 helps keep the pistol in the correct place during firing.

kenbo you're right, the well rounded and upturned beavertail on
the SP-01 is a very comfortable place to firmly index one's hand for the draw.

I own a 75 and an 85C as well as a new SP01.  As far as grip and trigger reach they fell pretty much the same to me (I have very large hands).  As far as weight is concerned the SP01 feels much heavier in my hand.  Really noticeable with much reduced recoil. ;D

I reckon it is also worth noting that asking the folks on an internet forum about the 'fit' of these two fine pistols is kinda like asking the same folks which pair of boots to buy?

What feels great in my hand and aligns to my stance, may totally suck in yours?

Now that gasoline is below $5 a gallon at the pumps, if it were me I'd be willing to take a substantial road trip to the nearest firearm emporium that had both in stock and see for myself before plunking down near $600.
