danz try the chor boy method and you will stop using mercury.  So much faster and easier.

I?ve never heard of chor boy. Is this a US thing or is it likely to be available here in NZ. If so what is it and where would I start looking for it.

danz - Chor Boy is a brand name for 100% copper kitchen scouring pads.  I am sure they are sold in NZ, perhaps under a different brand name.  Make sure they are 100% copper and not just copper coloured steel pads.  You don't want the latter.  Just take one of the pads apart and wrap some strands around an old copper wire cleaning brush.  Works real slick.  Two or three strokes and your barrels will be perfectly clean.  Finsih up with some Hoppes #9 or any brand of cleaning solvent.  You should be able to find the product in the kitchen cleaning area of any of your supermarkets.

I've never had a problem with just hopes #9, a bore brush, and some patches...

What am I doing wrong?  ;D

Perhaps but Hoppes#9 won't touch leading in the barrel.  The wire brush helps but is much more effective with the copper strands wrapped around it.

Sorry, I misspoke. I've been around for many years (Maybe the memory is starting to go) and have been familiar with Hoppe's #9 for many years, so it just slipped out in my reply above.

What I'm using today is Hoppe's Elite Gun Cleaner. It removes carbon, lead and copper - so they say.

I've used it too.  Carbon, yes!  Lead and Copper, not so much.

1.  Load to slow velocities to prevent leading, or use jacketed bullets

2.  If you have leaded barrels already:   http://www.frontiermetalcleaner.com/     It costs $4.99 delivered to your door, and is made specifically for firearms.  It's like a step up from Chore Boy. :-*
