New grips - maybe?
« on: April 28, 2009, 08:55:13 PM »
I have been communicating with Paul at designer grips, and he has indicated that if we can generate enough interest in his products, he would start manufacturing 82/83 grips for $30 (quite reasonable in my opinion). He has been making grips for Bersas (which is where I first became aware of his products) for some time and he offers a very wide variety of design and color. Look here for examples: Designer Grips

Any interest ???
CZ-82 9x18 Makarov / Black (for a short time)
Taurus PT-25 .25ACP / Nickel
CZ-75B 9mm / (Black Polycoat)
SiG P6 9mm / Refinished (hard chrome)
Armscor Medallion Tactical .45ACP / Black Chrome
...stay tuned...more to come!!!

I would buy a set for my CZ82. Looks like they are made from epoxy and glass. I bet they are very durable. I like the ones that are carbon fiber with clear epoxy resin.

Hi Guys,

It looks like we have enough interest that I will be creating a mold pretty soon. It's a fairly labor intensive process making the mold set and the silicone is pretty pricey also, so that is the reason that I have to have several probable orders. I'm not sure, but I believe I have a set that will be sent to me pretty soon. If not, I'll let you know so that you all can compare notes to see who has the newest looking grips to create the mold from.

And you're right, the grips are made of a high quality crystal clear epoxy and I reinforce them with at least 2 to 3 layers of a woven fiberglass cloth. For the stock grips that are thin plastic and hollow, I fill in the back side of the grip to make it even stronger, making sure that it doesn't interfere with any of the workings of the gun. And I believe I am the only epoxy grip maker who uses a 2-piece mold for both the front and the back, so that there is no need to do any "fitting" of the grip to the gun. They should all set right in place just like the originals.

You can look at my site at designergrips to see if there are any styles you like on any of the other gun models.  And I hope to be making some for you all soon.

Hi guys,

Thanks to RmeDad I now have a mold of the CZ-82 ready. This is the design that he requested, but if you go to my site Designergrips.com any of the designs of the other makes of guns can be adapted to the CZ 82.

Thanks

Now that you have the molds, can you make rubber grips?

Sorry,  but my grips are made of an epoxy and I don't have any kind of flexible material.

Hi Digital Shooter:

If I were your paid strategy consultant, I would suggest that your competencies seem to be in 1) creating suitable molds; and 2) customizing the materials to customer requirements.

My suggestion is stay away from direct head on competition with established makers.  Offer what they don't.  Such as your carbon fiber, glass fiber, etc.  Good move.  But think of other materials where you can leverage your mold making/fitting skills.  Some want highly customized fancy grips and will pay for them.  Others want simple knurled soft rubber--which seems to be difficult to find.  So don't think about what you can't do, but think about what you can do if the market asks.

And to that, I think you have a niche market for custom fit soft rubber grips for high volume milsurp pistols--pa63, p64, cz82, tokarov, etc.  I often see posts asking for them, but never see them sold.  I think you already did the hard part--fabricate the mold.  Now just experiment with rubber and I think you will be surprised at the quality you can produce and the amount you could sell...

Good luck!

Great advice.  I'll be doing a lot of thinking and research into rubberized grips.

Thanks

Digital Shooter - Can you give me a quote for the price and delivery date of a set of the pictured blue carbon fiber grips for my CZ-82 and one for my FEG PA-63?
They look AMAZING!
Thanks,
Rick
