cz 82 and wolf 95g FMJ problems
« on: June 13, 2009, 12:40:10 AM »
There are a lot of older threads about the unreliability of Wolf ammo in 82s.

I just bought a couple of boxes and loaded it into the mags anticipating my
trip to the range. I noticed the cheap steel cases seem to not feed well
out of the mags just using my fingers, seems like the rim of the case
snagged on the magazine.

Has anyone had any problems with the newer Wolf ammo in their 82s?
I don't want to get out on the range and have some kind of problem since
I won't know anyone out there and don't want to deal with a gun that is
malfunctioning. I would rather dump the ammo or give it to a friend than
risk an embarrassing or dangerous situation.

Any recent experiences with Wolf ammo and 82 ( 9x18 of course)

Thanks,

humm had no problems with it yesterday then again as soon as I got through my range test my piston kind of broke (see other post). but I found that the wolf ammo at 15 yrds was more accurate than the silver bear.

Steel cases are the norm rather than the exception for 9x18 ammunition, your CZ-82 was designed to shoot it and should have no issue with it.  The biggest problem most people cite with Wolf ammo is that it is exceptionally dirty when fired.  More work to clean up after a trip to the range and some people that shoot long strings have had issues with their firearm malfunctioning due to crud in the works.  As far as cheap Eastern European/Russian ammo goes most people seem to have the best luck with Silver Bear.  Steel ammo cases have a tendency to occasionally stick in the chamber when fired.  To combat this tendency the cases must either be coated with lacquer or polymer OR plated with some soft metal (zinc, copper, brass, etc.).  The Silver Bear cartridges are zinc plated (hence the name Silver Bear).  They seem to work well in the CZ-82s and Makarovs.  The only issue I've had with them is that they have a bit more unburned/partially burned powder exiting the muzzle (though this may just be an odd batch I got a hold of as I've not heard anyone else mention it).  One issue you might want to watch out for with the Silver Bear is that you should store it in dry condition, otherwise the zinc may oxidize and form a film of white powder on the surface.  Don't think it will hurt anything but it will make the ammo look funky.

I've also shot a lot of Brown Bear without any incident.  It seems to me to be basically equivalent except for using a lacquer coating instead of zinc.  The downside to the lacquer/polymer ammo is that it has the potential to leave deposits of the coating in the chamber that can build up over time.  If you don't clean it out between trips or if you shoot enough of it in one shooting you can get a round in the chamber that can not be normally ejected.  I've shot a couple of hundred rounds of Brown Bear in one sitting and had no trouble, but others have.  In all honesty, I hear more people reporting this problem shooting guns that were not designed for steel cased ammo (like the AR-15 for example).  The Wolf ammo you have is either lacquer or polymer coated.

The only problem I have ever encountered with WOLF ammo is in 9x18 with the conical bullet.  I had feed issues with it due to bullet geometry. Other WOLF 9x18 I had with the round bullet feeds fine. Just stay away form the conical bullet loads. Otherwise it eats everything, Brown Bear, Silver Bear, S&B, Hornady XTP and Fiocchi. Enjoy your gun.

I've had the exact problem with my CZ with Wolf ammo. The case mouth is hanging on the lip of the magazine. I replaced the magazine springs with new ones ordered from CZ and still had the same problem. I then changed to Fiocchi 95 GR FMJ and continue to have the same problem.

Is the only solution buying new magazines?

Do the lips of the magazine have any stamping flashes that catch the case as it wants to slide forward out of the mag?  Maybe the solution is to file or sand the lips to be smoother, so they don't catch and hold the case edge.
