Won't fire in double action. Please help
« on: August 15, 2009, 11:58:19 PM »
Just bought a used CZ 85 Combat. Basically, I can't get the trigger to pull in Double Action...it acts as though the safety is on (it's not). >:(

This is the procedure I'm using. (1) rack the slide (2) pull the trigger and thumb the hammer down. After (1) and (2) shouldn't the gun be ready to go in double action?  The person I bought the gun from assured me she was the original owner and no aftermarket modifications have been made. What is the cause of not being able to fire in double action?

you shouldnt have to rack the slide and thumb the hammer down to do DA.

it should be ready for DA unless its in SA.  you cant engage the safey with the hammer down, so unless its somehow engaged, thats the only thing i can think of.

id give CZ a call.

btw, the original owner could be telling the truth about no aftermarket parts/mods, but did you ask her if she shot it or if it worked?

Yeah she said it works perfectly.

So you're saying when I rack the slide the hammer should fall into Double action without having to thumb the hammer down?

no.  if the hammer is back (cocked), its in SA mode.  If the hammer is down, then its in DA mode. one or the other, other then half cock, but i consider that DA.  if you have shot any DA/SA revolvers its the same.

btw, the only other think i can think of is that maybe you have an 75B SA and not an 85.

question. do the s/n match on the lower, upper and barrel?

Yeah the SN match. I know the difference between SA and DA...problem is, when I rack the slide it goes to SA and I need to figure out how to get it to DA,

noleman, you should be able to just pull the trigger without racking the slide at all, with the gun empty try racking the slide and pulling the trigger in SA, the hammer will fall, then try the full DA pull from there. if you can't pull it, explain what you are felling and where it stops you pulling it, ie, does it move the hammer at all,
also just to check, it you thumb the hammer back, does the trigger follow it back?

to get to loaded hammer down DA status, you have to rack the slide to load and thumb the hammer down while pulling the trigger. sounds like you doing that part ok.

If I rack the slide (put it in SA), pull the trigger, the hammer falls. Once the hammer falls it SHOULD be in DA. Problem is, at this point it won't fire. It acts as though the safety is on (exactly like the safety is on).

so you cant move the trigger at all, i suspect something is broken or dislodged in the trigger mech somewhere,
if you thumb the hammer back does the trigger follow the hammer back?
if you hold the slide back the half inch to the slide stripdown line can you pull the trigger, it should be light and not move the hammer at this point?
check the spring under the trigger transfer bar (the U shaped bars running along the frame from trigger to hammer, ) it should be under the bar on each side, i've had to remove mine and straighten it before.

When I thumb the hammer back the trigger remains stationary (the trigger doesn't move while thumbing the hammer)

Thanks for pointing this out Wanderer

does the trigger always sit at the back of the trigger guard? if so, i think someone has converted it to SA only.
or somethings is broken.

Yep, it's sitting back. Either the trigger is broken, or it's been converted. If it is broken, what do you all think needs fixed?

(this is a view with the slide off, looking down, toward the trigger assembly) The "screw like" piece just below the coiled spring is holding the gun in SA only. Is this aftermarket, or just in need of repair. If it is in need of repair, what would you all recommend?

That would do it....looks like you have a trigger installed with a pre-travel adjustment screw.....that's not going to allow enough trigger return travel to allow the DA to reset (if the pistol even still has the DA disconnector).

I'd take it to a competent gunsmith or someone who can fully dismantle the internals to see what mods have been made.  You may just need a new trigger or just need to remove the pre-travel screw.  Any other photos of the pistol to get a better idea of what you really have?
