It seems that a lot of people wanted to get the steel rods in all sorts of guns.  It didn't become popular knowledge till later that this could lead to damage to the frame, if the frame and or the locking block area was not steel.  This is not exclusive to CZ...I recently had some concerns about metal rods in Glocks (the jury is still out...however I have taken up the practice of beveling the wide cylincer base of my Wolff steel rods, using progressively finer grits of sand paper).

Bottom line for me is that sometimes gun manufacturers don't use metal rods for very good reasons.  I will say that the second plastic rod I received from CZ seems to be of better quality compared to the original (which I only just found a week ago)...it is more solid -- less prone to bending and getting scuffed.  I actually really like it.  If Glock made their older gen rods like this, I would not go to metal in them.
