What do different colored dots do?
« on: February 11, 2010, 08:49:31 AM »
I've decided to buy a set of trijicon night sights.  From what I can gather:  Having a green front and two yellow rear dots will enable me to line up the sights faster if it's very dark, while green dots are easier to see when there's a little light out --say streetlights for instance.  Is this correct?

colors give varying levels of brightness. too bright can obscure your sight picture, too dim can make it hard to see. of course, there's also varying light levels from setting sun to pitch black.

it's all subjective. go with whatever you like. go to the store and find guns with different night sight setups and jsut pick whatever works for you there.

Too many dots, Too many colors. You will spend all your time lining up dots and colors when you should be looking for, and at, the front sight and firing the weapon.

Red front sight will draw your eye to it.  Green front will blend in with the background.  The thing I REALLY like about the fiber optic front sight and competition rear is that the glowing red dot doesn't require you to think about it, your eye just goes to it while the rear has no dots to distract you.

I have fiber rods in all different colors and after trying red, yellow, green in the front I like red the best.

I agree, I run red fiber optic front on all my guns with plain black rear.

I took the Night sights off my guns and went fiber optic front.
I would rather have the BEST sight picture in most lighting conditions than a mediocre picture in darkness. If I can't see the front sight I probably can't see what I'm shooting at either.

I also use the red FO front and all black comp rear.  IMHO: It pulls the eye to the front sight where it needs to be.

I've shot numerous other combinations belonging to friends at my range; and for USPSA and steel shooting (iron sights), I prefer mine.

In all fairness, I wasn't 'practiced' with the different multi-color combos; but I honestly don't think it would hinder this old bifocal user.

Years ago, I played a different game--.22 cal Bullseye.  For this game, where accuracy is the only goal, I still believe the best 'iron' sights are all black with a fine front blade.
