Anyone use their CZ-75b as a daily concealed carry gun?
« on: June 12, 2010, 08:31:29 PM »
Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and just bought a CZ-75b and I love this gun! Shots like a dream, reliable, double action trigger not too bad. It's only draw back is for a 9mm its heavy.
I have a pocket, ss .357 for concealed carry. Just wondering how I could carry this auto concealed from time to time. I'm not a paranoid that thinks he needs a gun on him all the time. But my town has gone to the thugs ( would say dogs, but that's not fair to dogs) and our cops are less than useless.

Wally ::)

I have some experience with that issue, but as I'm "less than useless" you wouldn't value my opinion.

Most of the time I carry my nickel 75B or in Winter a Witness 45 Compact. You get used to the weight quickly. Hardly carry my PCR anymore just because I shoot my B a little better. IWB for both BTW.

Why use 911 when it's faster to use 1911 or 9mm?

Road Dawg, if your a Jackson, MS cop, then you are "LESS, THAN USELESS" and I wouldn't value you're opinion! If your not, I'm not talking about you. I respect police, just not the corrupt, sorry a**holes that my city seems to employ.

larryflew, what's a good named brand IWB leather holster? How do these CZs finishes stand up to daily carry over time? It's hot and humid down here most of the year.

Thanks

I carry my 75b most of the time as I've gotten rid of my 1911 holster (there's so much work I want to do it that I don't bother carrying it right now). Even with a crappy belt the weight doesn't really hamper its ability to conceal, but you are always aware that it's there. How aware you are depends drastically on the kind of holster you use. I have a Comp-Tac Minotaur and a Milt Sparks VM2 and both provide excellent weight distribution and retention.

That said, the CZ's polycoat finish does seem to be especially susceptible to abrasive wear. Both the kydex and the leather in the Minotaur holster seem to not like the polycoat and have put some noticeable wear on certain parts of the gun, namely the top and left of the slide forward of the ejection port. This is strange since the leather is what's touching the left side, and it seems to do more wear to the gun than the kydex does.

The Milt Sparks VM2, on the other hand, is made out of some kind of magical leather that does little to almost nothing to the gun and is very handsome to boot. The VM2's shortfall is tuckability. I have the tuckable clips, but unlike Comp-Tac's, Milt Spark's are kinda worthless as they clip to your pants instead of your belt. This makes them very discreet as they hide under your belt, but pretty unsteady. The only other option is the belt loops, which work great, but force you to have a cover garment (untucked shirt, suit jacket, coat, etc.).

If you can live without tuckability I would go with the VM2 or any of the clones out there (UBG Holsters, for instance, run less than 70% of the price and have a much shorter wait) as they tends to use higher quality materials. Abrasion aside, however, I enjoy carrying in the Minotaur more as it offers much more versatility in carry (tucked, untucked, adjustable cant and carry height). It also rides closer to my body, I've noticed, which makes it a more stable carry platform.

I agree with Polizei. The Comp-Tac Minotaur/Cross Breed Super Tuck/Kholster are leather/kydex hybrids that distribute the weight well. I bet it's way too hot down there for a shoulder rig, huh?

The nice thing about hybrid holsters is that the kydex offers strength of shape while remaining relatively thin. The VM2 (and most full leather holsters) will have a reinforced holster mouth, which does an excellent job of preventing the mouth from collapsing once you draw the gun, but adds a noticeable amount of width to the rig.

Also, I really wish I could find a decent vertical shoulder rig for a CZ-75b. Galco has nothing, G&G have nothing, Bianchi only has their X15 for the CZ (I prefer mag carriers on the strong side), Safariland doesn't support the CZ for their vertical ALS holster, Alessi offers the Fieldmaster which I'm pretty sure is a hunting rig without mag carriers, and everything else is going to be an incredibly expensive custom job. I think FIST holsters makes a vertical holster for the CZ, but it doesn't have any kind of retention strap, which is a little off putting.

My IWB is a com II from HBE and it fits my PCR, my 75B, my Witness 45 compact and hopefully the Kimber Ulta I ordered. Had to reshape it just a little for the 45 but very little.

How about we give Wally a pass on the LEO thing and concentrate on his real question, as I'm sure that one small tidbit wasn't his intended focus.  Apologies to all for rising to the bait.

Regarding using the 75 as a carry piece: yes, I have and currently do.  I don't find it to be a burden as it's nearly as heavy as the 5" 1911 it's replaced as my primary CCW.  But that's my experience and others will be different.  I started my LEO career carrying a four-inch S&W Model 27, a big boat anchor of a gun.  I've always gravitated towards the full-size 1911 for off duty use.  The only "small" gun I use is a Kahr K9, which serves as an on duty back-up as well as an off duty piece in the very hot summer months, but even it's all steel in construction.  In short, they aren't bothersome to me because I don't know any different.

I often have to pause when I'm comparing weapons with another person.  I always get comments like, "That's really heavy." etc.  I suppose it would be if I spent my time toting a plastic pistol of some kind.  I don't have a problem with that if that's your thing, as most combat tuperware is very reliable and efficient. I just don't have a point of reference as I prefer all-steel full size weapons whenever possible.  I prefer the increased control the steel construction provides, and many of the small compacts are too small for my meat hook hands.  I'm a six-foot, 250 pound weightlifter so it isn't an issue for me.  If I stood five-foot-foor and weighed in at 140 it would be different, and I'd undoutedly have to take more factors into account.

The most important factors are holster and belt selection.  Far too many people spend a sizeable sum on a holster only to hang it off a Wal-Mart dress belt.  THe belt is as critical as the holster and a good one really aids in comfort and concealment.

Anyway, like Clint Smith says, "Guns should be comforting, not comfortable."

I tried for a while, but for all day it's just too heavy and bulky.

Thought about it for awhile, until I bought my PCR, then that thought quickly went away.

Yes. I carry a CZ 75 B daily... I live in "hot as hell" Africa and I cope with the weight and size when concealed...

I used to carry a CZ 82, but switched to a P-01. They're the same weight, but the P-01 is bigger. It took some getting used the bigger gun. At first it felt like a hog leg on my hip compared to the 82, but it'as really only 1/2 an inch longer.

Maybe it's not just the weight?

BTW...the75B, which is full size, is only a Whopper Jr. heavier than the P-01, which is supposed to be a compact.

No doubt CZ75's are great guns! However, there are much better choices for concealed carrying in my opinion.

For the sake of discussion, please elaborate on your opinion and what experience you use to make this decision.
