Thinking of an SP-01

I had a Phantom and sold it. I regret that. What I am looking for is a plinker that is comfortable to shoot. I will not carry it. I am not able to pick up an SP-01 and try the grip etc. Is it like the Phantom? That was comfortable. Is this gun comortable to shoot? I am a neewbie and appreciate the help.

I don't own a Phantom so all I can say is that for ME with MY hand, the SP-01 Tactical is one of the most comfortable, natural pointing, accurate, low preceived recoil pistols I own. Most folks who try it find the ergonomics are great, but like any item where personal fit is important, you'll need to find one and try it on for size yourself.

I just called CZ and they said the grip is the same between the phantom and SP01. That means that I should like the fit. I am assuming that the heavier gun will be somewhat more comfortable. Decision time. Has anyone had other makes and tell me why they think the CZ is better. I do have their rimfire rifles and I love them.

I can tell you the SP01 feels the best in hand then any other I have felt.  I sold a XDm9 and replaced it with a shadow.  I haven't shot the shadow yet but just the grip feels amazing.  The all steel frame really feels good to me.  I can't wait to do some practical drills.  I would definately recomend a sp01 based on the grip.  Something that feels so good in hand can't be wrong.

ive put about 1500rnds threw my SP-01 and i can tell you its far more comfortable to shoot then any other gun ive fire including the phantom. my onley complaint is the gun is very heavy which makes extended shooting a bit of a work out.

I agree that the SP01 is heavy. I had a nice used one in my hand on Monday and really wanted to buy it. But it felt like a dumbell. CZ has now made the PCR and P01 with alloy frames. I wish they'd wise up and make and alloy frame version of the SP01. If and when that happens, I'll probably end up having one. I have a P01 now, which feels great in my hand and shoots incredibly accurately. I can't even begin to imagine how accurate the longer barrel of an SP01 would be.

You gotta realize that SP-01 was not meant to be an all-day carry gun; if I'm not mistaken, their special forces were armed with those, police use compact and alloy-framed version.

Also, with longer frame, there is a higher chance that alloy will not hold up to heavy use. Carry guns usually see lesser rounds' count thru them.

Yeah, those alloy framed Beretta 92's can last forever. Saw a post from a competitive shooter on the Beretta forum that has over 100,000 rounds through one of his competition guns. It's pretty much stock except for a lighter mainspring and different sights. So a good alloy frame can definitely hold up.

My point is that I wish CZ would offer some alloy versions of their long barreled guns. Right now, the alloy frame is only available in the compact frame such as the PCR, P-01 and P-06. I think the standard SP-01 weighs in at 2.6 lbs, which is 41.6 ounces. With 19+1 rounds of 9mm loaded at approx. 1/2 ounce per round, you're up to almost 52 ounces fully loaded, which is 3 lbs. 4 ounces. That's starting to get in to dumbell range. Granted, the weight helps tame recoil. But most other guns that size are going to come in almost a pound lighter. At the moment, for me, the weight is a deal killer. However, if CZ puts out an alloy framed SP-01, I'll probably be first in line.
