If I move to California, will I have to throw away all my magazines???

   I know the law in California is 10 rounds max. but, are there any exceptions? Professional shooting matches? IPSC, etc? Can you use higher cap. mags? What about people moving into the beautiful state who already own ALOT of high capacity magazines?
I heard those that live in CA. and had the high cap mags prior to the ban are grandfathered in. True?

I believe the law clearly states that they must be boxed up and shipped to a Minnesota CCW permit holder before such move is made. COD is fine I'll pay the shipping :-)

When you go to a local range, don't fully load your magazines
Get yourself a couple ten round mags and keep them handy too
California is just too weird when it comes to this subject
You can own and use one hundred, ten round magazines, but don?t even think about having one, eleven+ round mag ! ! !

Good advice Den, I appreciate it...much better than shipping them to MN. The winters there are incompatable with human life...my poor little CZ mags would freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze!!!

leo and pre-ban are the only exceptions. if moving into state, the law says for you to be in compliance, you must disassemble the high cap mags into MAG PARTS, before you cross state line. it is unlawful to IMPORT high cap mags, but NOT high cap mag parts. and yes, they do consider a citizen moving into state from out of state where it was lawful to possess high cap mags, IMPORTATION.

the high cap mag law is wierd as another member already stated.

yes, there are plenty of people who have possessed high cap mags since before the ban, and for them, and those mags only, they are permitted to continue to possess them lawfully even after the ban. but the burden of proof is on them if ever questioned. most if not all retained proof of ownership since before the ban began.

high cap mags is a big and unmistakeable no-no in the "prk". (peoples republik of kalifornistan) it is not worth the risk. purchase 10 rounders for while you're in cali, disassemble and keep your existing evil mags for when you travel outside of cali. or, permanently modify your existing evil mags to only accept and hold 10 rounds.

The bad guys have nothing to do with it, unfortunately, it's all about controlling the law abiding citizen. Yep, disassemble your standard cap mags, and buy neutered ones. CZ-USA carries them. Or, you could "break down" in Free AZ on the way in and just happen to find work here....

You are correct -- as the bad guys here can only count to 10.

But of course that too is the liberal politicans' fault as they've destroyed what was once a great public education system.

The other theory is life in kalifornia moves at a faster pace so we end all gunfights in 10 or less.

Well, crap laws or no crap laws I live here for the good stuff...like 100 degree clear skies and warm ocean water in November...Of course that often leads to wild fires...oh my...anyway on the mags...One thing to be really careful of..there is a major web site pertaining to California guns and they have a very active classified ads board....there are numerous ads for folks wanting to buy magazines and frequently those ads are "salted" to try and trip someone up on hi cap mags....if you get rid of them when you get here completely break them down and advertise them only as reapair kits...nothing more and avoid any converstion that might lead to you indicating that by "just doing this or that" they can be mags again....got it?  Magazine repair kits!  I'd avoid keeping hi capacity mags unless I had proof of a trail of ownership back to before the ban...We all know the BG's and the hoodies have them but that don't feed the bulldog if you happen to pull one out at the range and there is a LEO standing there waiting to shoot.  The range where I do a lot of shooting is loaded with Border Patrol officers and LEO's as well as security guys from the Marine Air Station.  Good guys for the most part but I'd bet they might get a bit dicey if they noticed something that isn't right.

Enjoy the weather, I was stationed in Cali many years ago, brought an UZI back from there, legally, that's how long ago that was. Won't go back, and now with even a RINo out of office, I don't see good things for Cali gun owners until Heller and McDonald are brought to bear with some high priced lawyers.

I lived in Colorado and Nebraska until the mid 60's when I came to California..had one short stint in Albuquerque but mostly been here since '66.  I remeber the "good old days" in Colorado..every Sunday going to the guns for sale ad in the paper and see what was for sale..go give the person the money and take the gun home...Hunted, loaded, fished, did all the fun things of Colorado and Nebraska for most of my formative years. 

In California it was about the same when I got here and slowly but surely over the years it's morf'd into what we have today.  The changes came slow and quietly for the most part and I see many of the same changes going on other places now...the recent elections show the political "bent" of Colorado becoming very Liberal.  Denver used to be a big, conservative cow town but it isn't any more...I have several relatives in the Denver area that are screaming liberals and have a very liberal agenda.  Certainly not saying that all liberals are anti gun...not at all...but the general movement toward the more liberal flavor will bring those that are anti gun to the front.  Be cautious as it moves inch by inch and suddenly you won't be able to have hi cap mags, have to be fingerprinted to buy ammo, can't buy on line ammo, etc, etc.   A shame but it seems to come true more and more all the time.

Same thing has been happening in Western Montana for the last 15 years.  LOTS of Kalifornians moved out during the 90's when tech stocks were high.  There is almost a political divide from the mountains east.  And I HATE Billings.
