steel targets

How close do you feel you can safely shoot at metal targets? I have some knock downs that I shoot at about 15 yards, but can you shoot them at maybe 7 yards?

I've never shot steel at 7yds.  It seems mighty close :o .   I usually use a 1911 in 45acp on steel at 15yds or 50ft.  I know that there is a higher probability of a FMJ coming back your way than a LRN or LSWC.  A few years ago I saw a fellow hit (read-shot) by a 45acp 230gr FMJ shooting Bowling Pins at 50 feet.  The round stopped about 1/8" below the skin just below his clavicle.  He wanted to remove it then and there.  We convinced him to ride the "big white bus" (ambulance).  They removed it it the ER it had nicked his Subclavian artery.  He took a pint of O negative.
Probably would be better off with JHPs.  I would believe they would "dump" more energy on the plate/target.  Just my opinion.

Knock downs would be even worse than regular steel since they tend to lean back a bit to begin with
When did it change from "We the people" to "screw the people"?

Why use 911 when it's faster to use 1911 or 9mm?

I have shot mine at 7-10 yds a few times, but usually further.  The steel targets that I shoot are angled down and do a great job at spattering the bullet down.
