9mm Shadow Barrel Life
« on: December 01, 2010, 10:21:54 PM »
I'm curious when (@ how many rounds), do you recommend a recrown or barrel replacement for a 9mm gaming gun?

I think it would take alot to wear one out. If you kept a close eye on accuracy and if it starts to diminish, well maybe I would change it. I likely would be into another gun before I would wear a barrell out I would think. Hot burning powders will take its toll, but most of what we buy and reload for the most part shouldn't harm the barrells in our CZ's. As far as an actual number I have never really ever heard of anyone posting one.

According to Milan Trkulja, senior marketing specialist at the CZ factory, the barrel life should be 30 to 40 thousand rounds, depending on stuff you are putting through out your barrel.........this is for a 40sw, so for the 9mm should be 50 to 60 thousand.......

Those numbers are only "low" because of the double-base powders Americans like to use.

Cesar, we'll have to keep an eye on this one. I am already a quarter of the way there as I am sure you are too  :D I am sure the barrells are good beyond that but how many shooters EVER shoot that many rounds? Even still, if they do need replacement, thats a minor investment after that much use, a replacement is under $200 from Angus isn't it?

I would assume those figures are for jacketed fodder, and therefore should be even higher if one chooses to use lead instead.

Correct.  You do more damage to a barrel using an uncoated steel cleaning rod than you will ever do shooting lead.

Seriously, I wonder if that's correct considering pressures and cycles, 40 cal vs 9mm ?  Would bbl 'thickness' have any affect?

^^^ HOLY SH*T that's a ton for me. I could only wish I had enough events to shoot 500 or so a month. As of now I'm lucky to get 250 in a month.

There is a certain mentality that states that Hammer forged barrels have longer life spans than Broached or Button Rifled barrels. I do know that my 22-250 is on it's 5th Barrel since 1981. It's my Groundhog gun.  It lets me know immediately when it's shot out.  The groups go from .5MOA to 15MOA just like that.  3800fps velocities tends to wash out a barrel quick.

Here in Australia, we shoot lead coated projectiles exclusively. I have over 70,000 through mine & a mate has over 100,000. He has a new Shadow as a backup gun to his 100,000+ primary comp gun & states that the difference in accuracey between the 2 is minimal. I'm nowhere near needing another barrel either.
