CZ85 ? Cracked Frame! Yes it does happen!
« on: December 20, 2010, 03:43:24 PM »
Even though we do not want to accept the fact that the CZ85 is ?weaker? than the CZ75 here are some pictures that confirm that. The owner of this CZ85 bought it used and then he fired about 1000 rounds before the right slide stop broke. He replaced the slide stop with a new one and just after 4 years of shooting (4000 rounds) he had another right slide stop failure which also led to a bigger problem. (Cracked frame)

First time I heard of a cZ frame failing.  Do you a close up of the fracture surface?

A friend of mine who shoots 85 Combat has the same issues.
Right slide stop breaking, frame cracked.

Without knowing how many rounds have been through that used pistol, it's tough to draw any meaningful conclusions.

Any accurate round count on your friends pistol?

I think I can live with that. ;)

It would be interesting to know how many rounds went through it after the stop broke assuming the pistol would function 'normally' with a broken r/h stop.

Won't bother me if the CZ's slip a little further under the radar, they have been surfacing which means it cost me more $ to buy them!

You realize that where the frame is cracked is not structural, and the crack has nowhere to grow.  Infact on the PCR the area where that crack is on the 85 is completely milled out from the factory.  I would almost be willing to say that the crack is a non issue.

The crack appears to be on right hand side of the frame and IMHO due to larger hole for ambi slide stop. The gun will still be functional and safe to shoot as long as you don't throw it against very hard (steel/cement) wall as hard as you possibly can... without slide on :)

This post makes me wonder what springs the poster was running, what loads he shoots, and if there is a recoil buffer installed and it's condition.

my 85 had the older/smaller diameter right side slide stop and it broke after sevearl thou rounds.    IT was a known issue and  CZ had redesigned to a larger dia SR.  They refitted mine.

imo, it appears from your right side pic, that isnt a crack, but a scratch.  almost a right side idiot scratch seen on 1911s.

also, from the inside veiw of where the right side SR is placed, the materail is really thin there, so i would expect something like that.  however, the rest of the port is intact and will keep the SR in place.

imo, the CZ isnt "weaker", but the OEM design wasnt as robust.  you can call it what you want, but i still USE and SHOOT my 85 even with the mod CZ did.  Im sure if they had to do it all over again, the right side SR would have been designed more robust along with the position.  but hind sight is 20/20 and there inst much that can be done now, but its not like they cant change it if they choose.

also, since the newer 85s have the larger dia SRs, how many of them have broke?  the frame part will probably be the same, but how about the SR.

I think I have a similar issue with my cz85 Combat. The metal block inside the reciever that the slide release sits above on the right side has had a sliver chipped off of it. Right where the slide release spring rides in between that block and the reciever.

I keep calling it a block because I dont know its technical name, I am a gun noob. Is this something that I should be worried about or can I get it replaced?
