&*#$@ Chip in Pollycoat on the rail
« on: January 09, 2011, 06:39:57 PM »
Well I knew sooner or later this would happen but I was really hoping it would happen much later down the road. Anyway tonight while cleaning my SP-01 I noticed a chip on the rail. It's not too noticeable but my concern is will the gun start to rust now that the Pollycoat is gone? Is there something I can do to cover the chip ie paint or something? Will the chip continue to grow?

On a side not does anyone know if and where I can get the gun re-Pollycoated? Or is it possible to have the metal actually treated with something like the Duty Coat that Dan Wesson uses on their 1911's?

Thanks.

I believe there is a tough undercoat, too. You can use cold blue, hi temp auto paint, or let Mr Ahearn Duracoat it.

I don't know, give it a shot, but on a wear point like a slide rail it will wear off faster. Keep it well oiled too.

Thanks again. Whop is the person that you recommended to do the Duracoat? I looked into getting a Hard Hat treatment but it's $410 and I can't see spending almost as much as the coast of a new SP-01 on having it recoated.

the flat black of Duplicolor matches the color of the polycoat pretty well and it fills the chips pretty good if the chip is small.

it's an auto touchup paint. I found some at a Checker (O'Reillys) auto part store.

Brian Ahearn, he's a member here, just starting a duracoating company. Auto touch up paint might be a good idea - that's a tough paint.
