Just got ahold of a springfield p9
« on: January 13, 2011, 04:10:01 PM »
well, ive recently aquired this used and abused Springfield Armory P9 pistol, which looks like some form of race gun.  its chambered in 9x21, threaded barrel, looking to figure out who makes this compensator??

also it seems that the firing pin safety block was removed... is that comon praactice in these pistols?

all in all im yet to fire the pistol, ive been working on cleaning cleaning cleaning it out.  cakes of powder and the such EVERYWHERE, also EVERY mag i got (bout 7) had worn out springs.  pretty much had to dump the rounds out...  let me know what you think!!  did i get a pos or a decent plinker?

heres how it looked when i got it

thanks for any tips!!

Had a Witness almost exactly like that!  You can ask George at Evolution Gun Works (EGW) about the Comp, because he installed mine.

It was not uncommon to remove the Firing Pin Safety, in search of a better trigger pull, back in the heyday of the 9x21mm, which many used to beat the IPSC Major 9x19mm Ban.  Such Major Loadings can be very high Pressure.  Removal of the Martin Tuma designed Tanfoglio Firing Pin Safety won't improve a Trigger Pull at all and I would put it back in.

Were it mine, I would have the Barrel Chamber throat inspected for excessive wear, replace as many springs as needed, and shoot it.  Possibly rebarrel it back to 9x19mm.

Yeah, removing the safety is a greater benefit to the CZ than the Tanfoglio.

neat looking gun
here is an old photo of my USPSA open P9

I don't have this anymore, actually found it on a classified somewhere a few years ago.

the P9 back in the day was a great competition gun. it will depending on how much wear and tear the gun has been through.
Briley has P9 barrels, so a great source for a match grade barrel.
EGW has hammers, sears and slide stop pins if you need/want to replace those.
Some EAA/Witness stuff may fit and Henning Walgren has a good selection of grips and other trick parts.

Thanks for all the info! See the story on this pistol is a bit strange. My dad owns a gunshop and someone had owd him money. He took this pistol as payment just so the matter was done with. This was about 5 or more years ago. He have me the pistol as a hand me down (been getting alot of these lately) and although he said it was a pile of junk, a free pistol is a free pistol.  After scanning the internet to see if in fact it was junk, I realize they are not. I asked him why he would say such a thing and his response was upon acquiring the pistol, he shot it.  Said ever 4th or 5th round would jam up. He said he had a friend who would compete look over the pistol, who told my dad it was just a poor mans race pistol. Even the gunsmith couldn't fix it. This whole repair process happened so long ago dad said he forgot all about the pistol and what the exact problem was so its hard to really tell...

Sooooooooo... I decided to clean and play with the pistol for a few days here at work and I found all the mag springs shot. Every one of them.  That is one possible solution. Next after working the slide back and forth, I realized every so often it wouldnt fully close. It seemed to hang up half an inch. This problem seemed hit or miss, but still a problem. So I decided to remove the compensator and get a good look inside with the barrel off. After struggling with the now obviously cemented on comp, I got it off.  With the compensator off, the slide moves flawlesslyand properly.  I reinstalled the comp (no loctite yet) and screwed it back to where it had been, minus a full twist. Action works great again. Makes me wonder if the comp was installed to tight before?  Looking at the barrel, the threads go back into the slide about a full turn.  Soooooi guess we will see if I fixed anything here.. I have about 500rounds with this pistol so I plan on shooting it up before I plan on rechambering to the common 9x19..thanks for all the comments and as soon as I shoot it, ill report back

very cool. quite possible the comp and the mag springs are the culprit in the gun running properly.

when P9 were popular, it wasn't because they were a cheap alternative. It was because it was one of the few.
Caspian and what is now STI and SV ( was Chip McCormick then) were just in the getting ready process and were  year away. P9s and heavily modified Para mags were the only hicap guns for USPSA.

I shot my P9 in '92 and '93 and switched to Caspian hicaps for '94-'96. Then switched to STI/SV framed guns after that.

Thanks for the info!  if i remember right, my dad got this pistol back in the 90s. haha i dont know what i was thinkingwhen i said 5years ago.  and i can definately tell he just neverminded the pistol bc of how much spraying and scraping ive had to do! Im just hoping to prove to him this "pos" is worth shooting!  Being he isnt too computer savy, he doesnt have the resources like most when it comes to unfirmiliar pistols and their problems...  Hes usually blown away when i turn what he considers chicken bleep into chicken salad. Thanks!

Well justposting an update for those interested.. After getting the pistol cleaned and polishing some internals, I got out and fired off some shots..  Compensator off, only a few rounds in the mag (still havent got my new mag springs in).  Fired great!! Talk about a smooth shooter. Comp back on, this time not on extremely tight so the action worked properly, shot smooth as glass!!! Less recoil than a 22! Haha I'm very pleased! Never shot a pistol this smooth actually!
