Pics of SBR vz58
« on: February 05, 2011, 11:41:20 AM »
Has anyone got some photos they could post of their SBR VZ. 58?  I am contemplating doing that to mine and would like to see a few pics.

On another note, I saw that Troy Ind.  may be coming out with some more stuff for the Vz 58 this year, but I didn't get specific information.  Anyone else heard/seen anything?

Very cool!

One is built on one of the US made receivers that takes AK mags.  The maker escapes me.  Personally, I like VZ58 mags better!  They have to be the hardest aluminum alloy I have ever seen.

Those look like they have a shortened gas system, kind of like the Draco AK pistol.
I'm looking/wondering if it'll work with the same length gas system, so pretty much all you've got to do is shorten the barrel, re-thread it, and put a new front sight on (assuming you're already cleared by ATF)

Or am I mistaken?

Dan discussed on a thread in the Ask Dan forum how it's done. Czechpoint can make an SBR for you if you want to pay for it. Yes, you have to go through all the NFA paperwork/tax stamp, Club Fed ain't a nice place to hang out.

I found that other thread that talked about the SBRs.  I couldn't remember if it was in this forum, or the sub-forum.  It would get to be pretty expensive too...to buy the gun (which is spendy, then the $200 tax).  I wonder how much it'd cost just to send a regular size rifle in and just create an SBR out of it?

IME, it will result in a less reliable rifle. My 16" D-Technik has been cut down to a little less than 12"....and it won't run reliably now.

My 16" Century VZ eats everything I've fed it in terms of ammunition and ejects spent cases 15-30 feet.  My 12" barely dribbles spent cases out of the gun if at all using this same ammo and often has stove pipes or just completely fails to cycle or short strokes.

My bbl port on the 12" gun is now 4mm.....and I will need to have the gas block opened up to match to hopefully get the thing running....but from what I'm reading on another forum, expect only 3-4 foot ejection with hotter mil surp corrosive primer'd brass surplus ammo with the SBR length VZs...not the weaker, non-corrosive commercial ammo widely available in the US.

I'm not sure I trust the SBR'd platform in terms of reliability with that weak of an ejection pattern.  The AK Draco 12" pistols throw brass at least 20 feet from what I've witnessed at the range.....too bad their ergos (even after SBRing) suck comparatively.

***EDIT*** Obligatory pics....

Here's the SBR:

Here's the stock I modded for my Century....

Well, I honestly don't know how "good" it is....it's just my opinion....however, I'd like to note that if you'll watch the 2 videos in this thread....you'll notice that the guns in the vids aren't throwing brass much farther than 4-5' but are running just fine.

I think the thing to take away from all this is that as long as the gun is running 100%, it really doesn't matter how far the empty cases are being thrown.

I've been asking on the canadiangunnutz forum and the VZ SBR owners there seem to all report the same 3-5' ejection pattern with Czech surplus ammo.

I use non-corrosive ammo like Brown Bear b/c it's available in the US and I don't like cleaning ;) ......the ammo difference may be enough to account for my rifle's lack of proper function, but I'm inclined (after talking with Dan at Czechpoint) to believe it's b/c the gas block port wasn't opened up to match the bbl port by my smith when he cut the bbl down and opened the port.

I have a theory I think I'm going to try out to get more powerful ejection.....but I have to get the rifle back from my smith first.

I'll see how it goes and report back the findings. I can't say when exactly though.

Back in the day when we were trying to get the XM-177E2 to run we found that 10" barrels were nice, but, the function was unreliable...unless suppressed.  The muzzle flash with the ammunition of the day was like a flame thrower.  Eventually it was learned that 11.5" barrels would produce more reliability.  I guess you could experiment with different powders and bullet weights in a VZ58 SBR.  It would stand to reason that a heavier bullet weight like a 135gr and a faster powder like N120 or IMR 4227, might raise gas propagation and pressure to a higher level per unit time.  My AR SBR with the 11.5"bbl gets iffy without the Suppressor if I use 55gr, and Varget or IMR-4064.  It straightens right out when I use IMR-4198 (faster burn rate). Just a thought.

Recently, I started experimenting with my VZ58 and 527 in 7.62x39 with various .308 bullets and the accuracy has been good.  The coolest revelation has been with 110gr HPs. Results will be posted when I get done with the tests.

Sean did you modify/ weld the stock folder or is that something commercial? I have aces on both my saiga shotgun and rifle.
