That, unfortunately, is the attitude that divides gun owners into the what can be known as the "Rambo" and "Fudd" camps. Also known as being "Zumbo'd", after a famous gun writer slammed black rifles and lost his job from the backlash. It matters not the type of firearm, but the person behind it.
Here are two rifles, separate in function and design, united by a common caliber.
The one is not a "sniper rifle", the other is not an "assault rifle", they're just civilian legal firearms that I use in sport and defense. To arbitarily bar them from regular ranges is too fall into the semantics trap set by the Brady Bunch and others, to make you use their tactics.
Punish the user, not the tool.
If you have someone being unsafe with ANY firearm, make the RSO aware of it, call Cease Fire, do what you can. Once upon a time my wife and I were at the range, and she was having fun shooting her WASR 10. We didn't realize that her ejected empties were landing on a nice old couple next to us, but when we did see, we apologized profusely, and switch rifles. They understood and were not upset.
As for target shooting, I use both the rifles pictured here to shoot targets from 50 to 200 yards...
