First pistol match
« on: May 06, 2011, 03:29:46 PM »
If things go to plan I'll participate in my first pistol match tomorrow.  I've geared up for it over time and finally have the ability to make the monthly match. Here are some pictures of my gear. I'm anticipating a relatively humbling day for my first match so we'll see what happens. I'll report back next week, hopefully with pictures of the range too.

I started going to a pistol match in the Dallas area not to long ago.

I was nervous because I had never done anything like this before, and I ended up placing 2nd to last the first time out.

I also felt out of place, it didn't help that I have a polished 75b, and everyone else mainly had glocks, m&ps, xds, and 1911.
I was the only one with a CZ! Everyone was like, oh there's the shiny gun... They couldn't tell what it was either. "Is that a browning?" Did you chrome your gun?
The people were really nice though, and very supportive, great crowd to have a match with.

So after, I started to go the range more, practice my holster draw at home, and my sight picture.

I ended up going back to the pistol match, for a second chance to redeem myself, and what do you know, I placed 12 out of 26.
A nice move up I believe for my second time out.  After doing one stage pretty well, lots of guys started asking me what gun I shoot.
So I made sure to tell them it was a CZ.  I believe there was another guy out there shooting a p07 duty, but he wasn't in my group.

Looking forward to your report!

First I have to thank Stuart for reminding me about the essentials to take along to the match -- they were much appreciated items for sure! My wife thanks you too as she was spared having to hear me complain about coming home dehydrated and sunburned.

Second I have to apologize as I have no pics to post -- I was so focused on not leaving any gun-related gear behind I left the house without my cell phone and camera. You can see the range here.

The match and the guys at the match were great, very helpful.  Weather was fantastic, morning fog gave way to clear skys and 70 deg temps. The week before it had been 92 there.  I'm guessing there were about 40-50 shooters and of the gear I did see I saw three guys with CZs (one of which posts here), two of which ended up in my squad for the match. They time the matches, give bonus deductions for accuracy, and of course add time to your score for missed targets, shot hostage targets, etc.  I believe the rules are based around uspsa rules.  Not sure how I did time-wise as I left before the lunch when they total up the stages (it was Mothers Day weekend after all  ;) ). I do know that I'll be doing it again.

My 75B (.40SW but with a efk firedragon down conversion barrel) functioned near flawlessly. I was shooting RWS 124gr 9mm. The issue I did have four or five times I believe was light primer strikes.  In hindsight I should have tried to fire them off again after the match. So I don't know if I need a lower weight firing pin spring or the extended firing pin, or maybe both.

I went to one last year to see what it was like.....I have been to 27 of 29 weeks now missing only ones when business took me out of town. I bought a new gun and have really beefed up supplies and gottten serious about reloading again. I freakin love it. I started my first day second from last also and now generally finish somewhere in the middle of the pack. I do have a few days when I get the Mike curse or have a bad mag spring that adds 30 or so seconds to one stag and puts me back to my humble beginnings. The guys I shoot with are very cool guys always willing to help and suggest. I am just not very fast......what I mean is I am not very accurate when I try to go fast. I practice and I get pschyed but man are some of those guys and gals I shoot with good! If I ever were to come in last I think I'd still have a fun time. I would proabaly be a bit upset because some of my equipment would have not functioned correctly for finish in the cellar. Still If I learn something and get to watch some of those other guys do what I hope to someday do I have a great time.

In the name of full disclosure I thought I'd make my post on my first pistol match complete by posting my scores.  Let's just say, there's no where to go but up ...

I placed 31 out of 37 overall, and placed 21 out of 21 in my class. Perhaps someone can explain this -- I got put in the Limited class when I thought I should've been in Limited-10 since I'm limited to 10 round mags. I may not fully undertand the classification system.

In the end, I had a great time and will do it again trying to improve my time each match.   :)

Yes...the CZ75 40 is a great L10 gun, we got a shooter in our section that is running that gun and doing really well.
Limited is tough to compete in when you got only 10rounds..

next time you shoot, double check with you are signing in  for the match.

31 of 37 is pretty good for your first time out.
Did you sign up in the wrong spot when you signed in?
Competing in limited with 10 rounds/mag will put you at a distinct disadvantage.

How much fun is it though to think, start shooting, move, finger off finger off, shoot , move and drop mag, reengage, shoot, ding ding a couple steels sweet, move and dop again. shoot, slow down there is a white one now. shoot, done.whewwww, show clear hammer holster...........ALPHA ALPHA, nice!

email the match director and he can get you put in the right division. A ? though is your EFK barrel ported? If so then you will be put in open class and seriously get a whoopin'. If you plan on shooting 9mm then you need to sign up for production. .40 cal and sign up for L10. You are limited to 10 rounds per mag in both divisions just you get scored different when shooting .40. I hope I could help and congrats on the first match. I have to drive a little bit out of the way to get to the matches I shoot at and I try to make 2 a month. If you have got some savings saved up get prepared for a shadow in your future :)

No, the efk barrel is not ported.  I'm getting a whoopin as it is, no need to make it even more obvious  :D.  I'll email them to get me in the right division so my scores going forward are grouped where they need to be.  I saw the guy write down L10 when I paid the entry fee so they mixed it up later at some point.

Kenneth -- that's interesting, I didn't know there was a separate division for .40cal.  I thought the L10 covered both 9mm and .40.  There website indicated a stock service pistol (production) class but I noticed when they posted the score nobody was in it. So you're saying the .40 will get scored in a separate division from 9mm L10?

I'll be happy if I'm consistently competing once a month -- between gas and bullets, and my daughter's tuition that's enough for now.  I do think I'll probably buy a dedicated 9mm though, perhaps an SP01 but I'm liking the all steel 75B so it may not be a Phantom.

I may be wrong but 9mm is much better for production. Limited 10 requires a certain power factor and 9mm doesn't meet it. When you shoot production with a 9mm you are scored minor. You could shoot production with .40 but you will score better in L10 because of major power factor (I think). I know at my club nearly all production is 9mm. Production and L10 are basically the same except the calibers.

After thinking about it you can have 9mm major and .40 minor and major. So really I don't know the advantages of shooting L10/production with a .40 all I know is I shoot my shadow in production :)
