97B recoil spring weights?
« on: May 15, 2011, 08:35:01 PM »
I had a 16 lb wolf spring in my 97B and it ran ok with it, it only ejected the cases about 3 feet from the gun, but me being a reloader that part is great. I tried an 18 lb spring in it which is the same weight as my full sized 1911's and it ran good with it as well and had about the same ejection pattern. What weight are you guys running for a recoil spring, what would you consider to be to heavy of a spring weight?

I run the stock 13# spring and have for over 7K rounds through my work horse 97.  For heavy 230 hardball use only, a 14 or 16# max is recommended.  The 97 slide is quite heavy and absorbs a lot of recoil inertia (compared to a 1911).

A to heavy recoil spring will slam the slide forward tipping the muzzle down, make the next round hit the feed ramp hard (increasing the chance of bullet set back w/o a heavy crimp), and beat on the slide stop pin to death.

Folks seem to equate the 97 to a 1911 in many areas; there is virtually no relationship between the 2.
