First time Duracoat
« on: July 31, 2011, 04:45:11 PM »
I bought three Pre-Bs from Robertson's, an '86, a '91, and a '92.  They were all pretty rough on the outside, but the internals were in good shape and they functioned correctly.  This weekend a buddy and I Duracoated them.  Two turned out pretty good, but I am going to re-do one of them due to errors on my part.  It was the first time I've ever detail stripped a pistol or done any kind of refinishing work.  I would call them "5-footers."

Thanks!  Interestingly, the wood grips are from the Thai dude on eBay. They got to me in SW Texas in about a week!  He paid 45 Thai Baht for shipping. That's $1.51.

Very nice!  What color did you use?  It goes great with those grips.

It's Hk Satin Black. I really like it. Not too shiny, not too flat.

Those really turned out nice.  I've been toying with picking up a pair of those from Robertson's and refinishing them to be given as gifts to my son's this Christmas.  Sounds like they are a pretty good deal.

Bought 4 or five from Roberstons Trading myself and I am about to get 4 more good guys to deal with, by the way nice job and nice grips!
The 2 Cz 75's that I got from them are fantastic shooters, the one shoots sub 1 inch groups too 15 yards, people can't believe its a surplus pistol. Now that you done a couple you will want to do some more- have fun on your next project.

Just finished redoing the third pistol. I used an airbrush this time and was much happier with the results. These are fun to work on and shoot great. I wouldn't hesitate to get one or three of these if you were on the fence.

Nice work!

How did you remove the original finish?

I Duracoated a couple of Sistema/Colt 1927 .45s but they were only blued (nearly worn to bare metal), so there was not a lot of prep work.

I have a pre-B I picked up from Wideners with the old baked finish and it is rough.  Would really like spiff it up.

I used several coats of "JASCO" paint remover (Home Depot or Lowes).  Followed by a wire wheel in a drill press, the kind that looks like a mushroom on a 1/4" shaft.  Followed by an 8" maroon Scotchbrite wheel mounted on my bench grinder, followed by Mark Lee Express #1 rust blue.  I did the same to a CZ82.  Pics will follow soon.  George M.
