527 Kevlar Scope Setup
« on: January 07, 2012, 09:00:35 PM »
I just purchased a new CZ 527 Varmint .223 with Kevlar stock, from everything I am reading there can be clearance isues with certain scopes and the bolt.

I have a vortex viper 6.5-20x44 and was wondering what rings you guys recomend for this setup. The eye piece measures 1.72"

If I didn't give enough information on the setup please let me know what else you need and I will try and get it posted.

to avoid the bolt handle catching the mag ring on the scope you will have to fit the cz or warne high rings, on the varmint models because the barrel is more or less in line (level) with the action the 44 will look ok. as long as your cheek is on the stock when looking through the scope this set up would be ok . however on both my 527 s varmint and american i found i was lifting my head completely of the stock so the scope would have to be lowered i did not want the stock modified plus on the american the scope was in my opinion was to far above the barrel the barrel.  so the bolt handle would have to be modified, this turned out to be quite easy first fit the scope i found the med warne permantly attached rings to be almost perfect for my 3-12-50 s, remove the bolt handle from the bolt , turn the rear of the bolt 1/4 turn releasing the pressure of the handle which will then slip out very easily, place the handle in a soft mouthed vice gripping the "u" end of the bolt handle firmly but not enough to damage it so that the body and ball end is above the vice jaws, i used a fine grinding  1" stone the kind with a shaft that will fit into a hand drill, ithen proceeded to slowly grind down the meaty part of the bolt handle ( just above the bored1/8"hole on the handle), moving the drill up and down the shaft of the  bolt handle at the part it was catching the mag ring, it is important to be smooth in your operation of the drill, so the bolt handle retaines it shape (dont just hold the drill in one place). the handle can be removed and refitted temporaly in the bolt to see if you have ground it enough, when the handle cleares the mag ring it can the be polished up again i used a shafted polishing wheel finishing it off with fine wet and dry paper  untill it is silky smooth. it can then be re- blacked with any cold- black product. i have now done a few of these and believe me they  look, feel and will shoot better because the scope is closer to the barrel.

Do you have any pictures of the rifle with your scope and bolt mod so I can see exactly how it turned out. This sounds like a great DIY project that would be fairly easy.

Also thanks for all the information!

Well the scope did fit without having to buy a new bolt so I did luck out there. Only down side is so far all the cheaper ammunitions I have shot came out with roughly 1.5-2" groups. So far I have only tried AE XM193, PMC Bronze, and Hornady steel match 75gr that I have on hand for my AR. I picked up quite a variaty of ammo for my next outing and hope it likes the cheaper stuff rather than the expensive federal gameking and hornady ammo I bought. Has anyone here shot American Eagle 50gr HP with good results?

i have tried almost every factory ammo out of various .223 527s and without exception they all shot the 40-55g hornady varmint express best, even the 1-9 varmint, always grouping inside 1", some 3 holers touching. in every gun i have ever owned the cheaper federal was inconsistant. ive limited reloading expierience, but have had  success with 52g sierras, in the hornady fire formed brass.

I recently picked up a 527 Varmint Walnut.  Here are a couple groups using factory ammo at 100yards. prior to these shots there were 10 shots on the new bore to dial in the scope.

From Left to right:

6 shots 50g Barnes Varmint Grenade over Varget handloads, 5 shots Federal GMM 69g Matchking (seconds), 5 shots Federal 55g Nosler Ballistic tip(seconds)

Some very nice groups, wish I could afford to shoot the 69gr... I'm really gonna strive to squeeze 1moa out of cheap factory loads  ::) As much as I shoot I should be reloading, but I have my first born on the way and several house remodling projects going on atm. I see maybe getting started in reloading maybe in the next 2 years or so hopefully.
