Question re: Sights on new CZ75b
« on: March 03, 2012, 06:55:13 PM »
I recently purchased a 75b, am new to shooting and am having trouble sighting my new pistol.  The papers showed that my gun shot low and to the left in the factory.  I find that generally true when shooting at close range of 20- 30 feet.  However, at 25 yards, I am unable to hit the target, at all. I have reviewed my shooting technique and practice them, but feel discouraged about being unable to hit anything at 25 yards.. Is it me, could the sights be defective?  Please advise.. Thank you..

Try shooting from a good rest and see what happens. If You're a new shooter, it takes awhile to hit at 25yds, much less get consistent groups. I don't think you have defective sights. Shoot it for awhile at 7 yds-then gradually go longer....the 75B is a great and very accurate pistol. After you get consistent groups, then play a bit with the sights. Also, mine took about 1,000 rounds before the trigger smoothed out. Don't be discouraged, it's not the gun. Front sight, front sight, front sight.....

How much low and left did the enclosed factory target show?

And does this occur with all types of ammo you shoot?

Most production pistols are test fired to check function rather than accuracy, so I wouldn't be disheartened by the test target. As suggested, try shooting from a rest and start out practicing from 7-10 yards. Once you are getting consistent, then move back a little at a time. It's not easy to shoot close groups at 25 yards without a lot of practice and most shooters are happy to just get everything on the paper.

We are all trying to help and not discounting your ability to shoot.
It can be difficult to separate the shooter's abilities from the pistols performance, which is what you are asking for.

To test the pistol, shoot from a good solid bench rest very carefully and slowly.  Pause and rest if you are not holding the sights steady.  Aim at precisely the same small "spot" on the target each shot using a proper sight picture.  Use a precise "target". One with a visible but small bullseye/point of aim. Something like one of those 1" orange paste-ons or equivalent.  Ignore where the bullets hit.  Concentrate on the target, sights and the trigger press.  Try 5 shots at 7 yds as carefully as you can.
If you can hit within 2" at 7 yards (you can discount "one" flyer from the 5 shots),  those exact same bullets you fired WERE within 6" at 25yds when they hit the backstop/berm.  A  group within 1" at 7 yds is within 3" at 25yds

A proper grip, sight picture and  trigger press are all critical to accurate shooting.

Welcome to the forum, and let us know how it goes.

Thanks a lot guys.  Your information was very helpful.  I am glad to know that the accuracy of my gun isn't dependent on the factory's target print out.  I will try out the good advice you have offered.  I have been practicing, dry firing at home and learning how to work with my sights.  Will continue to read this great forum.  Much appreciated.

It is very difficult to shoot good groups with a new gun, just be glad you have a CZ to work with.  I took my new one out this morning and shot 150 rounds through it, split left and right handed.  I am used to a 3-4# trigger pull so I had to work at it to shoot the gun.  The sights were dead on, however, it was me moving the muzzle when pulling the trigger that needed fixing.  By the time I left, I had a 6" groups at 25 yards, standing, weak hand...

When I started, I was a little lower left right handed and further right left handed.  I finally learned to not move the gun much at all when trying to release the shot.  I didn't change anything on the gun, just changed the way I operated the gun.  When I get the trigger smoothed out, I fully expect to be able to do 3" groups at 25 yards, standing with this gun.  It is an excellent piece of machinery, operated by a human, however.

I went out to the range yesterday and tried many of the suggestions noted above.  Also had some friends shoot my gun.. I found the groups tight, using the bench rest.  Watched a good shooter hit bulls eyes easily with my gun, so am now realizing that the sights are just fine.  Everyone kept saying, "that's a great gun".  I think so too.  I recently purchased some 147 grain ammunition and am looking forward to seeing how that will shoot compared to the 115 grain I have been using.  Once again, thanks for everyone's input.. Man I do love to shoot !!!!!

Cool thread, thanks for posting it up Watch8 and welcome!

Some great info that I also needed to hear. Wasn't too happy with my own performance last couple of times so I'm happy to hear corrective measures and to get a better picture of the whole game overall. Other than my poor performance, during the course of shooting I had a couple of times where the gun was scary accurate, to the point of nooooo... that just can't be!??? Now I know how to duplicate those results again!

The shooters around you who make it look easy have spent years and thousands of rounds developing that skill, but they weren't born that way.   They had to work at it too.

Best of luck and have fun while learning.   Don't get discouraged, you will get better.

One thing I noticed last weekend.  All three of my 9mm guns shoot a little higher with 147 grain than with 115, say 2" at 15 yards.  I think it has more to do with how much the gun rises during recoil before the bullet leaves the gun than anything else.  The 147 leaves a little slower, so the barrel has lifted slightly compared to the 115 which exits quicker.

I guess the real test would be to zero the guns with the 147 and then try the 115 again and see if they all shoot a couple of inches low.
