I recently picked up a Gerber LMF and KA-BAR Mark 1 with a straight edge on the KA-BAR. I like them both. The KA-BAR fits my hand a little better than the Gerber. Both are solid knives. Been thinking of getting a Spyderco folder for EDC.

I think the Ka-Bar is the standard by which all other survival knives should be judged. It is a good, right-sized, full tang, fixed blade knife.  If you find a knife better than the Ka-Bar, you are ahead of the game.  But any less of a knife, and you are taking an unnecessary chance, especially considering the price of the Ka-Bar.

I have too many knives to just chose one, but in each pack I have fixed blade. One is my Kay-Bar and the other is a SOG Daggert 2. I've not used the SOG much yet, but I like the feel of it so far.

I tend to be one of those people that just accumulates knives for no good reason (other than I like them).  For me, fixed blades aren't nearly as practical as a folder in most day-to-day situations.  I've picked up quite a few Kershaw's folders recently that I really like.  I also bought a SOG recently that is absolutely fantastic - I will own more.  I hear Benchmade is nice as well.

That said, I suspect a fixed blade could be more durable in rough conditions.  One of my few fixed blades is a Cold Steel Military Classic, which is wonderfully sharp but so far is too "pretty" for me to use.  From what I can tell, Cold Steel really makes a great product.

Last fixed blade I bought was an Air Force survival knife sometime in the late 80s. Had a small "sharpening stone" in a leather sheath and the blade came dull.

I forgot - I do have one fixed blade, sort of. It came free with boots from lapolicegear.com. I think they retail for $15 or so, Chinese made, not even stainless steel. With rigorous application of my equally cheesy 1990s knife sharpener, I did get it to hold somewhat of an edge, enough to actually cut things. It came with a neck lanyard and a nylon strap for a boot knife, both works with the plastic sheath.

In addition an assortment of "pocket" and do-all knives,  this my surval knife.  Mine looks as good as this one I found on the web.  My sheath doesn't look good.
I inherrited it from my father.  This model has a history.  The company was a predecessor to the "Case" knife company

I have several versions of that sandy brown one. :)  Kershaw makes a great knife at a good price.  My favorite knife though so far is a SOG Vulcan.  I really need to get another one of those...
