CZ 75B barrel with larger/long round chamber
« on: April 30, 2012, 12:24:52 PM »
My CZ75B will not work with LRN bullets loaded to powder manufacturer's recommended length. I have to shorten the OAL on my 9mm reloads to support the CZ when shooting lead round nose. I don't have to do this for my Walther PPS or my Glock or the 9mm 1911 I had previously.
Can the barrel be modified to handle this or would a replacement barrel address the issue?

With the barrel removed, does factory ammunition just drop right in the chamber?  Do your resized cases just drop right in?  If so, are you sure your projectiles are sized correctly, i.e. .356" in diameter?  I've never experienced your problem but 9mm rounds are "supposed" to headspace on the case mouth not the projectile.  If factory ammo drops in, then you must have a problem with your reloads, crimp, projectile diameter, etc..  Do you have a "go", "no go" gauge for 9mm or can you borrow one from a fellow reloader?  If you really have a problem with the CZ chamber, I'm sure CZ would make it right.  Alternatively, your local gunsmith could easily use a chamber reamer on your barrel and get it to factory specs. It's possible the chamber dimensions on your Glock and Walther may be more generous allowing them to chamber rounds that your CZ doesn't like.

This is not a case size issue. they will fall in the barrel without issue as will factory FMJ, which is a more pointed round then the LRN. I do have a set of digital calipers that I have verified with standards provided by my employer's engineering department. And essentially, if I load a 9mm 124 gr. round nose per Winchester WSF spec (length), the rounds are not functional. If I reduce overall bullet length by a couple of thousandths, they work fine. This has been the case with 124 gr LRNs provided by two different bullet makers.
I ran across a reference a while back at another forum where they said CZ and some other European gun makers had a shorter chamber than some. Can't remember where I saw that, but I came across it the first time I was researching this issue. I just backed off the length by the amount necessary per trial-and-error. But I would like to know if there is a better way (other than dropping LRN rounds from my ammo can) to resolve this.
I forget my forum rules, may be improper to refer to another forum here, if so, I apologize:

Your problem is LRN bullets aren't the same profile as you typical FMJ bullets.  I have a bunch of lead moly bullets and I just have to load them shorter or they won't chamber completely.

The CZ 75 does have a short chamber, so does the XD.
If that is your preferred bullet type, the chamber can be easily and quickly reemed to accept the abbreviated nose shapes.
I don't know what a gunsmith charges for reeming the chamber "longer", but it shouldn't be much.   It is an easy thing to do according to my 9mm Luger major power factor friends.  They also prefer/need the longer chambers for loooong oals.  At least two I know have the reemer and DIY.
Check with your local gunsmiths for 9mm Luger chamber reeming costs.
This short jump to the rifling is credited by many for the CZ's accuracy, but I can't vouch for that.  We're likely only talking a few/10/20? thousandths more inches.

It is a very small increase. From the looks of it there are not many aftermarket barrels for the cz75b. I have found the CZ site and one other (and it had no 9mm barrels).

When I first got my CZ the same problem came along. It came down to having a local gun shop ream my chamber. In the end, I decided to learn the good-shooting beast I knew, rather than take a chance on the multiple unknowns.
