Best method for cleaning my new CZ 85
« on: May 05, 2012, 01:14:00 PM »
The durability of the satin nickel thread brought this question to mind. What is the best method to clean a new out of the box CZ 85. Lots of factory oil and grease some of which has found its way onto the satin nickel. I haven't had any time to do much more than take this gun out of the box inspect it and make sure everything functions with the exception of live fire obviously.

This being my first CZ are there any diagrams as far as lube points? I have been happy with all the standard Hoppes products and my guns seem to be happy using it.

I know I don't want to get solvent on the satin finish but what about the rest of it?
Gun is pretty gummy right now out of the box and the manual is quite general in explanation.

I use the standard Hoppes and soft tooth brush.  I like the foaming Gunslick Bore Cleaner.  Wait 10 minutes and wipe it out a few times.  I use nylon and stay a way from metal brushes.  I lube the rails with Mobil 1 10w 30.

imo, you should be careful about what type of solvent/cleaner you use on plated guns.  if the underplate is copper, stay away from any solvent/cleaners that attack copper. other then that, have fun.

fwiw, if in doubt, contact CZ and ask.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. What does the Mobil 1 oil offer over Hoppes or any standard gun oil?

The Mobil 1 is a super lubricant.  Most gun oils are only a fraction of the quality of a Mobil 1.  I use this on my rails only.  Think of the technology behind the development of this.

Reading the bottle on Hoppes 9 it states "not to soak nickel plated firearms in it" whatever they mean by that. I have used Hoppes 9 wherever I get a build up of residue around the extractor, breach face etc.

Is there another solvent I shoulds be using that will not damage the nickel finish that anyone is aware of?

Hello:

The satin nickel finish on my 85 Combat is quite durable and has held up well over the past 8 years of shooting and cleaning.  I shoot only FMJ bullets and clean the barrel, slide, and firing pin area with Hoppe's #9.  A few passes with a 9mm brass brush soaked with #9 or brake clearer in the bore gets out the power residue.  I oil the frame rails and underside of the slide with 40 weight Valvoline.  I clean the trigger mechanism and drawbar with brake cleaner - a brief squirt and followed up with a cotton patch, then a drop of oil  The outside of the gun is cleaned with 3 in 1 oil. If the gun will be sitting for a month or more, I run a patch lightly soaked in 3 in 1 oil through the bore.

The gun has shot 10,000 plus rounds and has been drawn from my Kydex holster hundreds upon hundreds of times.  It has slight holster wear on the front of the slide and nothing more.

Enjoy your 85 Combat.  You may find it to be one of the most durable, reliable, and accurate firearms you will ever own.
