My Vz2008
« on: August 14, 2012, 10:10:34 PM »
Was at a gun show weekend before last and picked this CAI Vz2008 for $495 + tax...

Came with a bayonet, sling and cleaning kit.  Trying to find a sidefolding stock as that is what the Slovaks carried when I trained with the 3rd Special Forces Regiment in Zilina.  I also spent time in Bratislava and Tren??n as part of a US Military Liaison Team between 1993-94.

I know the Century rifles are not the most desirable, but I liked the wooden furniture on it and I've been wanting one for a long time.  They're not commonly seen in these parts anymore so I figured I had better grab it while I can.

Cheers!  M2

Very Nice!!!  8)

Congratulations  :) and let us know how it shoots for you!   I'm betting it will shoot just fine.

As for a Folder Stock, there are some nice aftermarket one's available.

Sweet. Definitely a good price given how much the WASRs are going for now and considering you got wood. The CAIs I handled were quite functional, if somewhat less polished and Czech. If I were in the market for another service rifle (or rather my wallet could sustain another) I would likely get one of these to go with my Czechpoint.

The one I have is absolutely flawless. I really think the 2008 has gotten a bad rap due to the rep that Century has acquired. Apparently Century actually manufactured very little with these rifles and for the most part just assembled them. There are also advantages to owning one of these over the Czechpoint rifles. I would recommend to anyone one of these rifles.

My 2008 ran great new but had to send it back for some trigger work. Came back in a couple of weeks and has run like a race car ever since; It's a good one and is my main SHTF / bug out weapon. It has the folding stock, which I "Steveo'd" - pipe insulation & electrical tape, added the Czech military muzzle brake, NEA hand guards and pistol grip, and a peep sight. I have a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot sight mounted at this time.
Love to play with fast women, sharp knives & loud guns, if the wife says it's okay....

Thanks everyone, I think the Vz2008 is one of the best, if not the best, deals going right now!

The AMD-65 is a decent rifle still available for reasonable prices; but I am not as big a fan of the Hungarian as I am of this Czechoslovakian rifle.  Plus, considering the Vz is a milled receiver, the AMD just doesn't come close.

I do have a fair collection of AKs, to include a Henderson Defense WASR-10/63.  It's also good rifle and shoots well, but the Romy still feels "primitive" as compared to the Vz; and considering how much WASRs have gone up in price, they're not nearly as good of a value for money as the Vz.

To be honest I snagged this rifle because I see them getting scarcer and scarcer.  It's still under-appreciated in my book and one of these days soon I suspect the truth will become more widely known and they will jump dramatically in price, even the Vz2008s!

Agreed. I had a AMD-65 for a while and after the vz showed up it just didn't really measure up. The AMD feels heavier even with the shorter barrel and wire stock...not even mentioning the last round bolt hold open and all mags being light aluminum.

Well, finally got a chance to take my Vz2008 to the range this morning.  More on that in a minute, but first I have to announce I was able to get a non-wobbly sidefolding stock to it thanks to a fellow member of this forum.  I had gotten one from elsewhere but it wasn?t as the seller described, it had about an inch wobble in all directions when folded and about half that when extended.  I wasn?t happy as it was described as ?tight? but luckily a more honest individual offered to sell me one of his and since he was only a two-hour drive away I made the trip up to ensure it fit well.  It not only did, but we had a great discussion about these excellent rifles!  One of the things he asked me to do was post up my impressions once I got to shoot mine, so here they are?

Things didn?t start out well, I had the sidefolding stock on it and it was very stable, but after a few rounds I had a FTF!  Urgh!  Being a Kalashnikov enthusiast, I?ve never had a rifle not feed or eject.  I dropped the mag, reloaded the round and put another 4-5 rounds through it when it happened again!  Dang!  Now I am not happy!  I continued to experience feed failures through the rest of the mag, about 6 in total.

Now here I am thinking I have a bum rifle.  That is irritating as everything looked good when I checked it out, and even my friend who sold me the sidefolding stock gave it the once over.  I swapped out the stock for the wooden one I had and put in a different mag.

Success.  Thirty rounds without a hiccup.  I will admit the wooden stock does create a higher cheek weld as compared to the sidefolder (as expected), but it was also a bit less brutal on my cheek.  I put the sidefolder back on and shot a third magazine with the same results, no FTFs whatsoever.  I wish I had brought my fourth mag so I could see how it fired, but at least I now know it was the first magazine and not the rifle!

So, my thoughts on the Vz?  Well, I also brought my Saiga SGL-20 since I just mounted a red dot scope on it so I could compare the two.  I actually fired them one right after the other, and while the Vz was a great-shooting rifle; I have to admit the Russian AK had less recoil.  I don?t know if it is the 74-style muzzle brake on it (I have a muzzle nut on my Vz), or if it is just a more modern design; but the Saiga was easier to keep on target with follow-on shots.

But the Vz2008 was more accurate with the iron sights at 25m.  Granted, I had not dialed in the red dot yet; but even after doing so I had a somewhat tighter grouping with the VZ.  Now, let me caveat that with the fact that I was faster re-acquiring the target with the Saiga; but I was impressed that I could get better groupings with the VZ using the iron sights especially since it?s a tad heavier (which should have given it the advantage in recoil, but it didn?t).

Overall I can?t be anything but extremely happy with my Vz2008!  Other than the bad magazine, it shot great and was very accurate.  I am very glad I was able to get a tight sidefolding stock on it as that is what the Slovaks in the 3rd Special Forces Regiment in Zilina carried when I trained with them.  I want to put on of those Slovak brakes on it, most likely from CNC Warrior unless I can find a better deal from someone.  I am happy that I finally was able to find one that I liked, the wood furniture really made a difference over the traditional ?beaver barf? although I will probably pick up a set of that just to have.  Now all I have to do is figure out what was giving that one magazine the fits, hopefully I can get that sorted and the fourth one I have won?t have the same issues.

Cheers!  M2

The only time I have had FTF was when the mag follower and spring was not installed into the mag properly. The spring was backwards and did not fit into the follower groves properly. Once I fixed it I never had FTF issues again.

I have a set for sale if interested.

Thanks, I'll take a look at that.  As stated, the other two mags worked perfectly, and I don't see why this one shouldn't as well!

Thanks again, I'm a bit short on cash at the moment having bought the folding stock on Thursday and a 7-round magazine for my XDs on Friday.  I'll check back after payday.

Nice rifle. I really like the wood. These guns are sweet. I picked up my vz2008 a couple months ago at a show. It's my favorite gun. it's more accurate than I am but it lets me hit stuff at 150yds pretty easily with just the irons. Mine's got 500-600 rounds through it without a hitch. I did strip the mag and clean it before taking it to the range. There was some oil and crud in there that probably would have caused problems.

Having had a WASR10 that shot 8 feet low at 25 feet (I am not joking) I am now kinda burned on that "maker" but I am glad to hear that you are quite happy with yours!
