New CZ52 Issues
« on: November 01, 2007, 06:42:50 PM »
I received my new CZ52 from [link=http://classicarms.us newwindow]classicarms.us[/link] Tuesday and my ammo from [link=http://wideners.com newwindow]wideners.com[/link] today so I paid a visit to the range tonight. I loved the gun and it was a blast to fire, but I had some issues with it. The first is no big deal, one of the mags is bent and won't feed. The second issue is a little bigger. I ran 70 rounds of Yugo surplus through it and had about 7 or 8 light primer strikes. The primer dented, but did not fire. If I recocked it and tried again it would fire the round. I'm going to call Classic Arms in the morning and see what they say. I pulled the firing pin out and checked for cosmoline in its channel, but didnt see any. I hosed it out with Bore Scrubber, dried it with compressed air, then sprayed some CLP into it. Any other ideas?

You may be trying to fix the wrong thing.  Surplus ammo is sometimes hit or miss.  (Frequently miss.)   If its corrosive ammo -- it sometimes is -- be sure to clean the gun well  with water and vinegar at the range, before coming home and cleaning it in the usual manner.  A bottle of Windex does wonders.

Walt is right.  Surplus ammo can be a gamble... that is why it's so cheap.  If it were as reliable as new factory ammo, it would command a price closer to new factory ammo.  Generally, I find a second hammer strike is enough to fire most misfiring surplus ammo.  I eject and discard the rounds that don't fire after two strikes, which is surprisingly rare.

Thanks for the advice. I"ll get some commercial ammo and try it tonight. Just in case, I'll let Classic Arms know what is going on when I call about the bad mag.

I just talked to Classic Arms. They said to try different ammo, and that if I have any issues with it to let them know, and they send me another pistol and issue a UPS call tag for the one I have. They also said that if all goes well, to call them back anyway, and they will replace the bad mag.

I ran 50 rounds of S&B through it this afternoon. It ran 100%. :)   Appearently the Yugo surplus ammo that I got has hard primers, but for $65 for 700 rounds I can deal with it.

I did go ahead and order the hardened firing pin from Makarov.com and a new retainer and spring from E-gunparts.com. When the they get here I'll follow the instructions on here for polishing them.

Put one (or two if neccessary) tiny washer(s) under the hammer spring inside the grips. I had the same problem w/stubborn surplus primers until I did that. Now, every one shoots. It cost me 5 minutes and 12 cents.
