Lower hand guard pin stuck "crooked??"
« on: September 23, 2012, 03:11:22 PM »
Well last time I hammered the pin in, I think it may have been a tad crooked, as now I can't hammer it out at all.  I bought a brass punch set and the first hammer bent my punch.  The pin is the one that came with my NEA handguard, and it is the one that is "hollow."  No matter what I do it doesn't come out, my punches are bent, and now I don't know how to get it out without having to resort to taking it to a smith.

Help?

Couldn't get the pin that came with the hand guards started. So Iput the original back in.
Try a steel punch instead of brass. And hit it hard.

Depending on what the gunsmith might charge, you could consider buying an arbor press, some shims, and pressing it out that way. The first time I removed the pin it took all of that plus an arbor handle extension. Be sure to have someone helping stabilize the receiver in place.
