Has anyone chrono'd off the shelf ammo?
« on: November 01, 2012, 06:30:54 PM »
I just bought a CCW ( Kahr CM 9) and want to run my handloads with Berry's 124 gr HBFP and 4.1 gr of N320 at 1.14 for break in and practice because I have a bunch of it..

I'm pretty sure those loads meet pf, and they cycled a Ruger LC 9 as setup from the factory no problems although the cases didn't travel very far on ejection.. My question is how would they compare to off the shelf stuff.

Weaker...same?

I can alter things if someone has any suggestions to mimic factory ammo. I have N320, AA #7, and Unique to work with. I have Berry's 115 gr RN and 124gr HBRN for bullets, as well as some  124 gr gold dots I'll use for SD rounds.

Thanks.

Speers show their factory gold dot ammo at a velocity of 1150fps out of a 4 inch barrel....pf for 124g projectiles would be a tad over 1000 fps...but looking at the Vit site..as I'm sure you have allready done..you should be somewhere near....um would it not be a good idea to load that little pistol with the most whoop a@#$ factory zombie killing hollow points you can get...they are 9mm and at the range you are going to use it...well... ;)...will your new pistol accept that oal...i'm sure youve checked that as well...if it does run it in with what you have...I'm assuming those rounds are cycling your full size CZ
Nice looking gun by the way mate...shame it doesn't come in 357 cal O0

It would probably be a good idea to load the most powerful stuff I can buy...

or I could shoot a ton of stuff I have, and can load, and hit where I'm aiming.  ;D

The pistol chambers the 1.14 just fine. I just want to use the RN for practice/break in.

The plan for carry ammo is 124gr Gold Dots with either AA#7 or Unique.

Thanks johnny. 8)

Painter, the last thing new pistol reloaders usually get around to buying is a chrono.  By that time, they don't 'have' any factory ammo. ;D
I was shooting 124 FMJ reloads from a commercial reloader here in TX when I started reloading.  They chrono'd at 1100+fps.
Some of the ammo websites will provide velocity information.
My son did run some Wal-Mart WIN 115gr FMJ across my  chrono; and 1080' is what pops into mind,  but I may be wrong.  It was close to the  125 minimum PF though.

Based on my load build log, I suspect you're just above 125 PF with the 124gr HBRN.     4.1grs at 1.135" gives me (127.8 )--128 PF.  My Sig P239 runs fine with these.

edited to correct PF

Thank you.

I suspected they'd run OK...just looking for confirmation.

I have about 100 rounds of Geco 124 gr if my handloads don't cycle when I get there.

Just for the record.

My handloads cycled fine except for one fte, but didn't lock the slide back every time.

The factory Geco ammo locked it every time.
