Why would they have to replace it...  They should have qualified it before they made changes.   It and improvement but no longer good enough to be NATO approved.

All the NSN is an inventory item number broken up by classification of item, country code and non significant numbers,
Its way for countries to have items listed that is easily classified and recalled for use by NATO countries.

if you look at the report of testing, the testing was requested by the Czech National Police which had requirements for accuracy, reliability, durability and interchangeability.

The lack of the NSN number does not change any of the testing results of the design, but only speaks to the fact that CZ has changed in some one of the springs which alters the interchangeability requirement only of for the Nato stock number. I don't think that qualifies a statement that quality is going down.

The real question is - Why in the world would CZ change anything on the P-01 at all? I would think that CZ would be very proud to achieve NATO certification and would not want to do anything to jeopardize that accomplishment.

The only thing I can think of is some idiot bean counter decided to save a few cents per pistol by replacing one small internal part. Thus, rendering the NATO certification null and void. Probably the same idiot bean counter that killed off the CZ 83 and the Satin Nickel finish. >:(

Breaking my own word here and jumping back in. CERTIFICATION and STOCK NUMBER are two different things, NATO apparently looked around, saw CZ survived some torture tests mandated by Czech police and then decided "OK this looks like one we want" and decided to use it. In order to do that, same as the US army, they stick a stock number on it. Call it a BAR CODE like a can of peas on a shelf. To make sure you get what you want off the shelf, you have a stock number. NATO did not certify or torture test it. They CHOSE It AND THEN GAVE IT S STOCK NUMBER. I think putting that number on the pistol itself seemed a good marketing idea to CZ. That is my rational and thought upon reading and listening to folks on this matter.

Also, any product, no matter how good, gets EC's - Engineering changes. I have no clue as to CZ motivation. Maybe they just responded to little things needed as opposed to not tweaking it. And, for all I know, not putting that number on it may have need a function of an OOPS at the factory. May be someone said "Hmm... minor change.. before we stick this number back on it we better check (no pun).. but demand is so great, lets ship these now with no number as opposed to waiting". No clue. They run a business. They do not need to cut quality in these times to make more money.. Look at the prices. I got to go to work now....

My statement may have been a little exagerated.  I have just gotten to a point where I am just not fully satisfied with any maker at this point.

Being a NATO certified duty weapon try using Winchester NATO ammo at the range.  At least until it loosens up.  I had some failures to fire at first in all my CZs during the break in period because the slide would not fully cycle with lighter loads.  Also the higher pressure of them will help you get used to self defense loads without breaking the bank by shooting more expensive hollow points.

My friend bought a p01 a couple days after me and his doesn't have the number like mine. So what is the main difference? It's hard sorting through speculation rather than a simple sentence telling me what the difference is.

the Slide Stop spring has been changed.   direct off of cz-usa website.   "For many years, the P-01 carried an NSN engraved on its frame, making it the first NATO-spec pistol ever available to the public. Recently, the factory decided to upgrade the slide stop spring which in turn means the current models may not carry the NSN."

If this ends up being temporary those without NSN will have a rarity on their hands. Which is probably a good thing.

That is a positive way to look at it.  +1

Though I would chime in as I just picked up my P-01. Test fire date was December 18th, 2012 and it has the Gen 1 slide stop spring and NSN. My guess is that they made the change, decided they didn't want to lose the NSN after a batch or two of guns was made, and switched back to the original spring to get the NSN back.

X02Wyvern, glad you let us know about your new P-01. Since it was just made in Dec. '12 and has the Gen 1 spring, sounds like they have indeed gone back to the NATO approved designed. Interesting!

While I have accepted mine, that I assume has the Gen 2 spring (I'll check next time I field strip it), I gotta say the Gen 1 spring looks more substantial with the longer tang and more bends in it. The Gen 2 spring looks kind of wimpy, like it could fall out any minute. How the heck does it stay in place? Maybe it'll make sense if I can see it installed.

Anyway, I'm sure you'll enjoy your P-01. Only been to the range once, but it really does feel and shoot great! Just having trouble finding ammo.

If this is of any help, my CR made CZ 75 D Compact was test fired in June 2012 and, as I just checked, has the "Gen 1" slide stop spring.
