Good point!!!!  If in fact the OP is in Ct, then he does not need to register the gun, but IS required to get a pistol permit in order to legally own the gun.

NOT TRUE he can legally own the gun in Connecticut.  He can keep the gun in his house, take it to registered compition to use, take it to formal training, or take it to the manufacture for repairs.  He may NOT transport it to the range or carry it without a permit.

I think I would have local LE run the serial number first to see if it is stolen. If that is a stolen gun, keeping it would be bad juju.

In FLA, I found a Made-in-the-USA 1" bbl 5 shot SA stainless revolver in about 4'-5' of water off the gulf coast.  I thought it was a toy at first, but it had 5 shiny new 22LR cartridges in the cyl.  I took it to the local police, they said checks needed to be run on it.  Come back in 30 days. 
I went back.  It was 'clean',  and they gave me the gun.  "Gun" is the correct nomenclature.  It had no discernible rifling in that 1" barrel. .

Better safe than sorry.

My apologies if my understanding of Ct law was incorrect.  Wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.

Are you telling me that as a Ct resident who does not hold either of the types of pistol permits I can still own and/or purchase a handgun so long as it does not leave my house until I leave this foul state?

My understanding of Ct law is that you may not own a handgun if you do not have a pistol permit. (there are 2 levels of pistol permits).

If you believe I am incorrect, please correct me with chapter and verse.

Police can legally lie to you, and then arrest & charge you if you act upon their lies.  Even if they're not outright lying to you, they may not know the laws you're asking about and will pull some wild (and wrong) theory out of their butt so as not to look clueless in front of you.

The Police Chief in Newtown CT (Chief Michael Kehoe) is no friend of gun owners. He is a politician who is on the gun control ban-wagon. He recently said in a newspaper interview; ?Ban assault weapons, restrict those magazines that have so many bullets in them, shore up any loopholes in our criminal background checks.?

You will probably get in some very BIG TROUBLE if you show up at the Newtown CT police department with a gun. You may want to call a Connecticut lawyer who knows gun laws and get some real advice instead of an open internet forum.

A person needs a permit to legally transfer a handgun to after Oct of 1998 in CT.  So, you can not buy a pistol without a permit.  Sec 29-28 is the statute that covers pistols, but there are some situations that are not covered.  Think of a widow that now legally owns a gun.  She can sell it privately, but must get the sale (to a permit holder or dealer) approved by the DPS.  Just like any other private sale.  It is legal for her to posses the gun in her home, but not to take it out of the home.

This video is LOOONG, but I recommend everyone watch it.  It is very interesting and applies to dealing with police for anything, not firearms specific.

Actually, asking the police for legal advice is a very bad idea and that has nothing to do with "having issues with the law".   Cops are not lawyers and very few of them know even 5% of the laws in their state.  Asking a cop for legal advice is a very bad idea.

And yes....COPS CAN LIE TO YOU (or simply unintentionally give you false information)  and YES.....they can then turn around and arrest you for doing what they suggested.  Those are facts and have nothing to do with "having issues with the law".

And yes, I DO have issues with a lot of laws and no....I don't trust cops.  Most of the cops I have known (including 2 brothers-in-law) were idiots and broke more laws than they enforced.

When you need legal advice, you ask a lawyer, not a cop.

Okay, this has gone from 'do i need to register a found gun?' to 'don't trust the cops because they deliberately lie to you and then jam you up'.

If people can't separate their own distrust of the police from a simple request by a member, this thread is done.
