Well I loaded up a mag and watched it as it went in. It's the bottom of the bullet that is hitting the area right below the ejector, if you ease the bullet forward in the mag just a hair then install, goes in nice and easy.

I've had a few issues with FTF's but my gun is also new, about 500 rds through it.
I reload and noticed that 230 and 200 gr. require a shorter than usual OAL.
I also use 185 and 200 Gr. semi wadcutter without any problems except for the same FTF's occasionally.
The slide has never closed when inserting a full magazine though.

Hope you find the problem because it's a great gun.

What type of FTF were/are you getting?

What OAL are your 200 and 230 gr reloads?

I' don't remember what the OAL length was but it was short enough to cause feeding problems in one of my 1911's. Armscor Target model that is very tight in all respects. My S&W 1911 feeds all types of ammo without any problems whatsoever no matter what length or bullet style.
I'll look up the information in my log book and let you know.
I got the information about shorter than suggested OAL by someone on this forum and tried it, it worked so i used it until I tried to fire them in my 1911 where they all jammed when closing the slide.
The FTF's I've had with the 97 were all feed problems. For some reason after cleaning them all, and they were not very dirty, about 25 rounds through them, the 97 took all sizes and shapes at standard OAL without a hick-up.
Like I stated earlier, although I've owned the 97 fro 3 years I don't have much time to shoot (busy paying taxes) the gun has about 500 rounds through it.
I think that in new condition the guns are much more sensitive to smaller amounts of residual powder and other dirt that gets into them.
