Modifying an AK grip for the VZ?
« on: August 03, 2013, 04:43:30 PM »
I went from a VZ 'bakelite' to a FAB, and while it is adequate, I think I'd rather have the more vertical angle of the AK grip.  How is this done easily?  Thanks.

I suppose the real answer is no.  Nothing on Neit Arms site now concerning he VZ-58.

Not entirely true.  I did it with my US palm AK grips. I used a hand file but a dremmel would make the trimming to get it to fit in the grip plate much faster.

The grip bolt on the US Palm grip fit the VZ. GASP AK PARTS COMMONALITY!

I did the modification of a hogue AK grip using little more than a sharp knife... the dremel would be much faster.

Agreed.  If I do this again, with that enticing Magpul AK grip, a dremel will be my chosen tool.

Sorry no pics :(  you basically have to remove the excess material around the grip cup.  The easiest way to figure out where to remove the material is loosely, loosely attach the AK grip, maning do not crank the bolt/screw down tight, trace around the grip cup on the grip, remove about an 1/8 of an inch all the way around the inside of that line....  that will allow you to tighten down the grip without smashing/damaging the grip cup.  You could also remove all the material from the 1/8 inch line out to the end of the actual grip, but that is up to you.

It is what I call the portion of the trigger guard that extends past the surface of the rest of the plate... you'll understand once you remove your stock grip.

Czech out this grip: http://www.vz58rifle.com/products/pazbicka-458/

The Czech's will likely ship to wherever you are internationally.  Milspec product.

I actually prefer it to the textured Ronin Galil Grip I have.  They're expensive, but worth it IMO.

A little over $50 US would be a group buy cost for US delivery.  More for int'l so you'd probably be ahead with VZ58rifle...

I like that one.

I actually contacted them about the 458 Grip they are selling
because $30 shipping for one grip is ridiculously high.
They offered to ship for 20 but I declined.  ;D

You want to do a group buy?

I'm very interested if it will save 10 people absurd amounts on shipping.
If you keep doing what you've been doing, you'll keep getting what you've been getting.

Yes, I wasn't really happy with the Ronin one so I went ahead and gave this a try.  There isn't a lot of discount on this through a group buy on item cost, but there is a tremendous cost savings from shipping.

If we get 10-15 folks/orders, that should be enough to get at least some discount.

Let me know if you'd like to try and get a group buy together. Thanks!
