.223 reloading....224 diameter is correct
« on: August 06, 2013, 12:44:55 PM »
Hi guys. I am looking for a bullet to reload .223 for a cz 527 lux with 1:12 twist. I see here that 52 gr Speer and 52 gr sierra matching in hpbt are a good bet. I found some matching but the diameter says .224. Is this usable for reloading for my above cz?

Well...for the sake of being completely inept about the .223 Remington. I did find this nifty article that is "mostly" correct. (I think the bullet weights for a 1:12 are lower that stated).

Anyway...forgive my ignorance....

.223 size is for the .22 Hornet and the likes. .224 is for the .223 Rem. Why they insisted on calling it a 223 when utilizing a .224 bullet is beyond me.

The 1-in-12 twist is common for older .223s and some current models. I shoot 55 grainers in my Rem 788 with 1/12 with no problems. Up to 62 grains may be fine, but heavier weights common in military 5.56 will not stabilize well in a 1/12 twist.

No, matching the bullet OD to the groove diameter of the barrel is correct.
.224 is what the .223 is supposed to use, but if you haven't measure your barrel's groove, then you don't really know what will be best.

As SMSgt mentioned, .224" is (and has always been) the standard bullet diameter for the .223 Remington.  The .223" bullets are holdovers for old Hornets.  Even most NEW Hornets are cut for .224" bullets.

You want .224" bullets for your Lux...and the 52 grain Sierra Matchkings you mentioned earlier will be great for it!
