Just bought a DPMS oracle 5.56/.223 AR. I got the OD green magpull butt stock, 1 pmag, 1 reg both 30 rounds. OD green Magpull front handle and a McStar red dot. $900 out the door.  after zero'ing the sight I put 3 rounds in a circle the size of a quarter at 300 meters. pretty good for a budget gun.

Just interested:  How did you zero the red dot and what size is the dot?

Not sure what you  mean why the size of the dot, the red dot I have you can change between 4 different "dots" but I used the single small dot, have a cross hair and a few other ones to pick from.

 I used the same paper target  in the Army. you put the paper at 25 meters, and the size of the  silhouette is the same as at 300 meters, get 3-4 rounds in the center and a tight grouping and you are good. something about how the path of the bullet is the same as 25 M and 300M (idk about ballistics).

Usually they are measured in mm-up to as big as 6mm. I've been thinking about 3-gun competition, but $$ are an issue.  I like the looks of yours and the price is right.
The Matel rifle with the handle doesn't suit me.

Thanks man, The upper and lower on this rifle is solid. no movement at all. 1/9 twist and stamped 5.56. I would to do the 3 gun comp. also but the auto shotgun is where it breaks my bank lol

So what you're saying is you put three shots into a circle the size of a quarter at twenty five meters, not three hundred.

I qualified on that target and others similar to it over various courses of fire during my career, including true life sized at three hundred meters.  I have to say I have never seen any AR platform from original M16 through M4 deliver what would be super-sub MOA accuracy like that.  I'm not trying to burst your bubble, but don't let yourself be deceived that using a scaled down target at close range is representative of true long range performance at full scale ranges. 

Enjoy your new rifle for what is take and try it out at real ranges.  You may be surprised at what you can really get out of it and what you can't.  But at least you'll know for real, and that's what matters.

well, the black silhouette  is what the target will look  like at 300 meters, no there is no wind to effect it, but there should be no reason not to be able to hit a 300M target since its "kind of the same" other than the fact  its not  real 300M out. The grouping might not be as tight though.

Looks like you and bob are in agreement.  We qualified on man sized targets, OD green, that would pop up in different locations and fall when hit.  Groupings were wide at 300 meters, but a hit was a hit and that fact was driven into the old psyche.  It built confidence in the M16A1 we used at the time.

That would be good enough at a 100 yards.   Talk to JoeL about 300 and longer---not the same thing at all.,  but a good trigger pull is still a good pull at any range.
