Got my P-09, have the CGW spring and firing pin set, any tips
« on: January 15, 2014, 06:06:49 PM »
After lurking around the site to find more info on P-09 accessories I have learned quite a bit about my polymer pistol.

One of the thing I learned is that dry firing the pistol can harm the soft firing pin and especially the roll pin that stops it.  In my feverish excitement to go shoot the thing I had dry fired it about ten-trillion-ty-thousand times so I figured I may want to have a look at it.

After a quick spin through the CGW website I have ordered a firing pin kit with some different springs and a spring steel roll pin to take care of that and maybe make the trigger nicer too.

Does anyone have any diagrams, charts, guides or just sage advice I should read before I dive in with my newly acquired 1/8" roll pin punch?

And while we are at it, what are you guys using for slide lube on the metal contact points? Seems like a nice synthetic bearing grease would do nicely but if there is something that you guys like I'm all ears.

Thanks.

Any light grease will work on the rails, I use Slide Glide Light but am not too picky if it isn't 10F or colder out.   The lighter hammer spring will help the trigger pull a little, I think mine was 3 lb 1 oz after putting in the same kit you have coming.  That was light enough for me, for now.  I think you should just shoot it.  And dry fire the heck out of it, no ammo around, of course.

Any quality hand gun can be dry fired without harm. Maybe ten trillion times is a bit much but anything less and you should be fine

That's what I thought too. I'll see if I can post up some pics of the firing pin and roll pin that I removed. I've only had it for 2 weeks. The notch on the firing pin that hits the roll pin when dry firing was already getting worn and pushed back. I don't know if it would cause breakage but the dimensions were definitely changing pretty quick.

I think I saw a post about the issue by CGW on here somewhere.

With the solid pin and the change in shape on the CGW firing pin, you can dry fire it forever.  If it breaks or gets peened so that it can't move properly in the channel, CGW will replace it.  Some of the changes David made to the firing pin were made so that dry fire wouldn't be a problem.  Take a look at your stock parts.  The radius in the firing pin isn't the same as the curvature of the retaining pin, so it hits in a thin line of contact and this is where it appears to get beat up.  The curvature of the CGW pin matches the curvature of the pin.  And the pin is much stronger than the factory part so no problems with the pin breaking.

You already have the fix installed in your gun.  Shoot it.  Dry fire it all you want.

The stock FP isn't so great.  I have the CGW parts kit in both of mine now, but my first P-09 had less than 400 rounds through it and the FP cracked.  I have another 500 rounds through it with the CGW parts, lots of dry firing and the parts look like new.
Bro, do you even pew?
