Teflon Coated Witness Slide....Before and after pics
« on: January 24, 2014, 02:28:08 PM »
I?ve been looking to change the Finish on my Witness Slide since I bought them
Never cared much for sighting over a silver Slide and I DO love the DuoTone look, so I looked into Black Ice Coating, here in Spanish Fork, Utah; http://www.blackicecoatings.com/

Lee runs a very nice business and deals with his Customers, one on one
I went in and talked with him about colors, settled on the Matte Black Teflon and dropped-off my Witness Compact and Long Slides
The job took less than three weeks and is exactly what I was looking for

Here are a few before and after pictures of my Witness and its ?new? Slides:

I LIKE it.
Looks more like a shooter!

Let us know how it holds up.  Do you shoot from a holster?

Looks awesome, Den!

Is your lower Wonderfinish or a satin nickel?

Thanks G...I love the new look

I LIKE it.

Well 1, the only Holster(s) I use are my Conceal Holsters, but Lee said it'll hold-up better than all other Coatings

That looks real nice!

Thanks SD

Thanks James
Yeah, it's the Stock Tanfoglio Wonderfinish
I hated it on my Slides....too much glare

Are you using the same with multiple slides?! That's pretty cool. Could you go into some more detail about your setup here, I see the compact and "long" slides, do you carry the compact slide? Are these all interchangeable from the box? Or did it require some gunsmithing to get it all to play nice together? I'm still learning about Tanfoglios offerings.

Btw the finish is beautiful, I love how the black slide sort of plays off the controls. This is how it should have been shipped, much cleaner look almost.

c100xgpt:
Thanks for the kind words and questions.......
What you see is a Witness Full Sized Large Frame, (never a whole Pistol) that I ordered NEW with the 10mm Compact Upper, and they run flawlessly together (as they came to me) from the Gun Shop I ordered it from
This set-up became the first of the three configurations you see and what became my Day to Day Carry Weapon; a 10mm Semi Compact
I then bought the 22 Conversion Kit ( full Upper and 1 Magazine) and I added the 4 extra Mags at the same time
This Slide did need a little attention on its rails to run smoothly within the Frame
It didn't take too long though, mainly just removing the PolyCoat Style Finish it has, which seemed to slow its travel
I am impressed on just how accurate the 22 really is
I figured it would (at best) be a fun "Plinker", but it's really quite a little shooter
Because of how fun the 22 "Longslide" is, I chose to buy the 10mm Longslide Upper
This Slide needed quite a bit of Rail work, both inside and out
Can't say how long I worked on it, to allow the Slide to run its full length of travel
Not just Finish, but some metal needed to be removed before it was right
It runs very smooth now and is very fun to shoot, quite accurate too
And finally, not that long ago, I sold off the 5 Old Style 22 Magazines and bought 5 of the New, Lockback Style 22 Mags

Hope this helps

When you say you had to do "quite a bit of rail work, both inside and out" could you go into a bit more detail on that? What sorts of tools were necessary? Does Tanfoglio claim it should "just work" or do they make no such claim?

EAA / Tanfoglio says that it "May need" and "Should be" fit by a Gunsmith
That doesn't mean it won't just slide right into place and cycle perfectly
It gives them the wiggle room they need to CTA

When it comes to fitting a ?Conversion Kit?, remember this;
NEVER mess with the Host Frame?..EVER !

The 22 Slide needed just a bit of lovin'
I mainly had to take the Polycoat off the Slide?s Rails
Not much, if any, metal needed to be removed
Pretty much what I expected

Now the Longslide was a completely different case
The Slide itself wasn?t true
The Rails were not square / parallel at all
They were off by several thousands in more than one place
Not sure what caused it to be so out of whack, but it was
I needed to remove quite a bit of metal from both Rails, both outside and inside surfaces in a couple different spots on each Rail
I used my Dial Calipers, a Square Rule and Files to do the needed work
I was afraid to use power, i.e. my Dremel
I would have sent it back, but at the time, it was the ?LAST? Square Sided Longslide left in the Country
After trading posts with Friends on the Tanfoglio and Witness Forum, it seems that my Slide was an oddity
No one else has had a similar issue
Hope this helps

Very Nice!  8)  I like that color combination and have considered it for my Wonder Finished .45 Witness.

Moving this over to the Clone Club.
