Between the wood impregnated bakelite and factory blond wood, which is worth more?
Been thinking about trading my bakelite for a solid wood set.

The wood is harder to find, but also seems less desirable. I have seen the woods sets sell for less than the beaver barf.

You can get solid wood furniture from Ironwood Designs so I would price yours from their prices.

Numrich still has some wood furniture available.  Stock was around $28 I believe, after applying my C&R discount.  They had upper but not lower handguards (or was it the other way around?)

Complete wood sets can be bought on eBay, as well.

Keep in mind the real wood will crack when it gets hot.

Didn't know the wood will crack when hot. I'll be careful to try and not get it hot.
I would love to have a matching bayonet but unfortunately my rifle doesn't have the lugs.

beaver barf works much the way carbon fiber does but looks about one billionth as cool.  really strong, really ugly.  still, it's better than holding the bare barrel.

FYI if you sand the Beaver Barf with fine grit sandpaper to make them look really good.

Yeah the hand guards get hot real quick with the barf.
I was hoping the wood stays cooler.

So just sanding them makes them look better?

I am afraid sanding them would expose more wood.
I want to keep it as original as possible and not spray any clear coat on them.

I used 100 grit to remove the ruff top layer, then 320 to a smooth feel, then 600 to a fine near polish.

The outer most wood fibers are always exposed so all sanding does is remove the ruff part. And I used no clear coat of any kind. The pics below are after hitting it with a little lemon oil to show the texture.
