Pocket carry for CZ 83?
« on: March 06, 2014, 09:58:50 PM »
Long story short:  I purchased my CZ 83 for concealed carry.  Sometime afterward, my working conditions changed such that carrying anywhere on my waist is not an option.  My work attire is not well-suited to a shoulder holster, either.  My first plan in this situation was to save up for a smaller gun that I can pocket carry, but I don't have a lot of extra moolah lying around (who does?), so the saving process will take some time.  In the meantime, I have a gun that I can't carry 75% of the time -- sorta defeats the purpose.  I could trade in my CZ, but I really, really don't want to if I don't absolutely have to.  While browsing the thread on CZ 82/83 holsters, I saw several posts on pocket holsters that will fit the 83, namely the De Santis Pocket-Tuk 111 and the Remora Series 7 "3-in-1".  Now, what I would like to hear is from any folks that have had success (or lack thereof) pocket carrying their 83's in either of these holsters, or any another brand as well.  Could I really pocket carry my 83 eight-plus hours a day, or is it more like wishful thinking?

Thanks in advance!

Check out www.UnderTechUndercover.com  The shirts work well for concealment. I haven't carried my 83 in it yet but I do carry a Smith and Wesson CS9 to church every Sunday. I haven't been 'made' yet.

I don't think I would feel very good about cocked and locked in a pants pocket - too easy to go Plaxico.

Also take a look at http://holsterpatch.com/ for a less expensive alternative. They are iron-on, but I found when my daughter sewed them in as well on various t-shirts that I wear under my regular shirt, they work much better.

No real reason to pocket carry a CZ-82/83 in condition 1.  The DA trigger on either is pretty good!

I find pocket carrying those guns a bit difficult in anything but cargo pockets or my leather jacket that has oversized pockets.  But sometimes you have to do what you can.

I found a milsurp P-64 that I use in a pocket holster works great for summertime carry.  You do need to change out the springs to smooth out the 'legendary' DA trigger on them.

Agreed on both counts. I'll sometimes pocket-carry my vz.82 when I'm wearing cargo pants or shorts but usually alternate between my vz.70 and my P-64. (And always in a Robert Mika pocket holster.)

Guess I'll have to check out some cargo pants next time I'm out shopping.

ccoyle,

I pocket carry my Sig P232 in a Sticky holster (similar to the Remora).  If I'm not mistaken, the 2 handguns are similar in size.  It is sometimes challenging, especially when bending over to pick up something.  I have some pants that are somewhere in between cargo pants and regular khakis and it works nice in those.

I think I would enjoy a CZ82 for sure.

Not trying to unnecessarily resurrect a dead topic, but thought I would wrap up my story of carrying my CZ.  For me, the beloved CZ ultimately proved just a tad too big, bulky, and heavy for pocket carry.  In Kalifornistan, our choices for small, inexpensive pocket pistols are limited.  I ended up getting a good deal on a new M&P Shield in 9mm.  Although many folks consider the Shield at the upper end of what is suited for pocket carry, it is considerably smaller and lighter than the CZ and has pleasant shooting manners, too.  I am very happy with it so far.  I did look at several other pistols before buying the Shield (Kahr CW9, Springfield XD-S, and CZ RAMI) and ended up choosing the Shield simply because it fit my hand the best.  As a nice extra, I did not have to part with my CZ as part of the deal, and I intend to keep it for the foreseeable future, since it is such a pleasure to shoot, and just so darn good-looking besides (the Shield is utilitarian by comparison).  Thanks, all, for the previous tips and advice!

Just read through all this thread. Ccoyle, I'm not really surprised honestly that you went another route. But I'm glad you got to keep your 83. I adore my 82's.

I carry a fullsized gun, OWB everyday. I have for years. Whether it's a Beretta M9 or my current, CZ 75 Phantom that I've carried for a while now. Since I carry large guns everyday, either OWB (the most), IWB, or with a shoulder holster. I'm not too sensitive to size or weight of a gun. For the last year or so, I've been carrying a vz. 70 as either a rare primary carry gun in my right pocket or as a BUG. And even though the 82/82 isn't that much bigger than a 50/70. The extra weight and size might not be worth it. Even for someone who likes to carry large guns.

The Shield is a great gun.

I've pocket carried my 83s in a Remora "3-in-1."  It works in jeans pockets if the pockets are deep, but the length of the pistol is such that it comes up to just below in brim of the pocket, so leaving the shirt untucked is essential for the pistol to be fully concealed from someone standing next to you.  While it is heavy in the pocket it is not uncomfortable, but it does leave a noticeable bulge even in non-form-fitting jeans.  The "3-in-1" came with a nylon velcroed strap that I use for retention, so the pistol is secure, even if I bend over.  I carry cocked and locked with no problems.

However, my preferred mode of carry in OWB with a UGB Regulator custom made for an 83 with a squared front trigger guard -- more comfortable, easier to conceal, and easier to access (although WA allows open carry).
