Contemplating a Canik Stingray
« on: April 01, 2014, 04:26:57 AM »
I've been on the lookout for a regular P-01 for a few weeks now, and nothing's popped up. There are a few P-06's I can get my hands on, but I would really like the 9mm setup. Locally, there is a nice Stingray C for sale, new, for a good price. I do eventually plan to get real CZ's, but the stingray is looking pretty good. I plan to use this as my everday carry gun, and CCW as well, but my concern is the reliability. I don't mind the weight either. I've heard they are pretty hardy, and I can't find any mentions of failures among Caniks. I've made some contact with Century, and they have given me a phone number to call should I have issues, and they confirm that they have parts, so maybe I shouldn't worry so much?

Will this gun serve me well? I'd like to hear from owners who've had theirs for awhile. It's a beautiful gun, but I'd like it to be a durable, reliable gun too.

The stringray is a fine shooter ,but it's a little on the heavy side for everyday carry. The weight is what makes it an accurate easy recoiling pistol, but I would suggest that you find a C100 with the alloy frame or go ahead and get the PO1 or PO2 Omega trigger pistol. They are available on Guns America and Gun Broker. If you want the best bang for your buck the I would suggest the Sar B6 poly compact, I carry one every day. You can get the Sar for $245.00 at CDNN right now with one mag , Buy 2 more mags and have a nice accurate shooting carry pistol for about $300.

I have a Stingray-C and a C-100.  Both are awesome guns and in my humble opinion are just as well made as the CZ guns.  I've owed three CZ-75B pistols.  The Stingray-C is too heavy for the use as a CCW pistol, at least for me.  Get the C-100!  The C-100 is 11 oz. lighter than the Stingray-C.  I weighed both on a food scale (23.5 oz. compared to 34.5 oz.).  I use the Stingray-C as a home defense pistol with a TLR-3 light on the rail.

I bought my C-100 at budsgunshop about three weeks ago.  It was fast, cheap, and easy.

I shot 400 rounds through my Stingray-C a couple of weeks ago. Then 150 round through it this past weekend. Even though it a tad heavy I've been carrying it. It doesn't fell any heavier to me than my 1911.

I been thinking about a C-100 myself.

With out a doubt there is no problem with Canik quality I own 2 120's a steel and a light alloy  frame version , 2 P120's steel , a shark compact -forgot about that one another good carry choice and a shark full size. I had a Stingray for a year that I trained new students with , every one enjoyed how easy it was to shoot. One of my female students talked me out of it and she uses it daily as her defensive side arm in her home {she works out of an office in her home daily}. I just personally like to carry a lighter pistol with at least a 14 round capacity and two back up mags so I opted for the Sar B6 compact poly pistol - low cost and I won't be upset if it becomes evidence if I am involved in an incident that requires that I shoot. Last the pistol has held up to a substantial amount of daily abuse in my shop environment and has never failed to shoot even when extremely dirty with media blast dust and shop dirt. Any one of the Canik compact pistols will get the job done for you.

Always wondered why the general consensus is a Canik Stingray is to heavy to carry, when so many guys carry a 1911  that weighs more seems acceptable.

I love 1911's, carried one in the Marines, has two drawbacks the weight and the 8 round capacity. The Canik stringray is fine on capacity ,but has the weight like the 1911. If you put the Sar B6 compact or C1oo alloy frame in one hand and a Stringray in the other it's a big weight difference.  The weight of the pistol is a personal preference. In a carry 9mm I like light weight. In a 45 acp I would take the heavier pistol to offset recoil and keep the pistol on target during rapid fire.

You guys rock.

As I said earlier, I'm not worried about weight, so with everything else considered, I think this pistol is a good buy for me. I'm waiting on the opportunity to get a P-01 or a PCR, and my USP is on it's way to HK to update the firing pin and a few smaller things. So at the moment, I'm without a handgun. I've always liked CZ, but something about the stingray just draws the eye. I may pick it up today.

I have three Colt Gov't 1911 pistols.  I have several holsters for them including a couple for IWB.  I stopped carrying them because they are too heavy (39 oz.) and too big.  For CCW I'll use my C-100 and the Stingray-C will sit in the safe.

Love my Stingray and I carry it everyday, but mostly open carry.
The C100 is on the wish list.
Looking forward to trying Dexter's.

Hope I am not misunderstood on the weight/carry issue, it was a honest question not a challenge, and thanks for the answers.
I agree 30 something oz. is heavy for CW carry. I know it is for me and the BP6 compact is a nice choice.
For me I want smaller even yet, more along  LCP size, then you have power and capacity issues.
It can be hard satisfy everything in one package.

Let me add, the more I shoot these CZ clones, the more I like them, Canik and SAR.

I have an LCP that I carry a lot.  It weighs 9 oz. unloaded.  Sure it's a dream to carry.  Often I forget it?s in my front pocket.  However, as said, it lacks power (.380) and capacity, not to mention shootability.  Once I finish making my IWB holster for my C-100 I'll be carrying it.

By the way, there are no challenges or pissing contests here.  It?s just a bunch of good natured guys/gals giving their experiences and opinions. :)

I really like the ergos of my stingray-c and it feels confident in hand, but I couldn't ever see myself giving up my Glock 19 for EDC. It's very like, sleek,  9mm, and is extremely easy to shoot (I like Glock triggers, blasphemy I know).

I could see myself carrying the stingray-c on occasion for an OWB option in winter where a coat would still cover it etc.

I picked up the stingray today and bought a blackhawk pancake holster for it for now. Carried it around at home for the day, and it was very comfortable. I am playing with carrying it concealed and I think it will do just fine. Very impressed with the quality, and can't wait to bring it to the range. Looking at IWB holsters and some new grips to personalize it a bit. My local FFL guy is still looking for a P-01/06 or CZ compact, but I'm pretty happy with the Canik so far.

Range report to come in a day or two.

Thanks for all the opinions, I look forward to being part of the community!

Genin: my regular EDC is a USP compact, but it's out for service. I think the stingray is a nice gun to put in my carry rotation. I have a glock 19, but I registered to my wife and she carries that. Great gun, but the grip does not agree with me. I do have to try the Gen 4 though, they might be the perfect size grip for me now.

Dragonfly if you like the glock ,but not the grip what you really need is a glock upper on a timberwolf frame that solved my issue with the glock grip. Adds quite a bit to the over all price of a glock.
