After a fun shoot match today, I hung around with two guys who wanted to play some more.
One with an STI 40 limited pistol and the other with a customized Czechmate for open major that he was new to shooting in major PF..
The CZ shooter was trying to zero in his red-dot at 10yrds and getting close. I suggested 25yards (curious about the results) and some competition with shotgun hulls on the berm at 25 yards. 5 hulls each, 5 shot maximum/Virginia count.
Waay fun, and they got enthused with the small reactive targets.
The STI shooter hit two cases with high and low misses on the first pass. The CZ_Mate was having trouble hitting the cases, mostly high or low, and I suggested trying my 75 Shadow and told him the POA---he hit three of the five. He was buying the cokes!
As I was hopingO0 , he suggested I try his CZ. I'm not at all experienced with a red-dot and I was chasing that HIGH AXIS dot all over the berm. I only nudged one shotgun hull. I got a little more adequate with it when I JUST focused on the target, but was still really uncomfortable. I suppose a lot of practice would help overcome my lifetime habits with iron sights and a lower sight axis, but not really sure of that. The total clarity of looking at the target instead of the sight was a great change. With a lower sight height, it would be a lot more comnfortable to shoot.
Just passing on the fun experience, and still thinking about switching to or adding an open 9mm major PF pistol.
The pistol itself had a great trigger and just a little bit of flip and less felt recoil than my Shadow with 134/5 PF using MG 124 JHP . He had added a weak hand thumb rest I couldn't reach, so I ignored it. The grip felt a little bigger, bit the trigger reach was good. He was loading 124RN over Auto-Comp at 167PF. I might have wanted a little more PF for insurance and maybe zero flip, but I have no personal experience in Open class.
