refinsh questions
« on: April 24, 2014, 06:03:59 PM »
So I painted my ol 83 with some hi heat flat black spray. I think it looks great. but some areas have a rougher texture after painting and want to know if there is a way to smooth out the finish without messing it up. Second I do notice the finish rubbing off alittle, but its only been done since yesterday and needs a few days to set good. But like a goof I didn't use a primer just more coats. I read about baking and preheating oven to 150 and baking the finish on. but how long do u bake and is it safe for the barrel.

It should be safe for the barrel...many firearm finishes are a spray and bake process.  I'd bake it an hour-ish.  Preheating the part before spraying opens up the "pores" and lets the finish get in to the metal a bit.  I did a scope mount in ceramic engine paint and it's held up OK (although hasn't seen much abuse either).

I would imagine the surface imperfections you have were either due to poor metal surface to start with, or it was from the paint application or dust settling into it.  I don't think you'll be able to smooth it out without stripping it and starting over.

If you're referring to the finish on the slide, its surface is a combination of bead-blasted and milled.

I would agree. I had one stripped and blued and another one stripped and hard-chromed and both have that "matte"-like finish. The surface (especially the slide) is not meant to be a mirror finish.

the finish isn't working out as well as I thought. think I did to many coats. trial and error. wanting to remove the paint and redo. what's the best paint thinner and or stripper to use to remove the paint and not hurt the firearm. sure regular thinner would work but thought I would ask.

Paint-stripping gel from HD will do the job. Also removes the factory coating as well.

Good deal i'll check into it. My in laws have some thinner too so I may get some of that to get the current finish off that I applied and prime and try again.

I have successfully used acetone to strip the painted finish from a CZ82.  Disassemble the slide or frame and cover it with acetone in a suitable glass jar or old (no longer used for food) bowl or baking dish.  A sealed jar with a metal lid (acetone dissolves many plastics) helps keep the volatile acetone from quickly evaporating away.  After soaking the slide or frame for a while (time will vary, depending on the paint) try scrubbing the surface with an old nylon toothbrush.

Acetone worked very well for me removing the original chipped finish on the CZ82 slide, prior to a refinishing operation.

Good luck, whatever process you end up using - and post some pictures!

well I removed the finish. wondering what grit sand paper to use to get the metal prepped for painting and to adhere better.
