My New Canik 55 Stingray-C is Fine Except For....
« on: April 26, 2014, 09:53:56 PM »
There's a spot where the finish is missing. It's small but very visible just underneath where it says STINGRAY-C on the frame.  :-\
If I send it back to Century, will they charge me shipping both ways?
Should I just find some titanium colored model paint and touch it up myself? (I got the titanium finish. Pistol is very sweet otherwise)
Use a thin fine model paintbrush?
Any suggestions?

Don't screw with model paint (various reasons).  If it really bothers you send the pistol back.  If the paint flaked off it was most likely due to a paint prep issue.  If CIA addresses this issue they will need to send you a new gun.  CIA will not repaint the gun it will need to come from the factory if repainted.

How small is the spot?  Did it flake off or was it from an impact?  If it's from an impact it may complicate CIA doing anything about the issue.

Would you please elaborate as to why a little touch up paint is a bad idea on firearms? If not model paint, some other type of paint that is more appropriate?
Looks like it flaked off. It's small, only about 1mm but has left the layer under the surface coat showing which is a darker color. When I run my finger over it, there is no indentation, dent or scratch. Nothing can be felt. It's triangular in shape. The eyes go right to it. An eyesore. In the box at the FFL, I saw it (along with all the oil) I thought it was small proof mark or something. It happens to be directly in the center and underneath where it says STINGRAY-C on the frame.

My cellphone takes terrible pics. But I'll have my friend take the pic (on his cellphone) on Monday morning and then try to post on the forum here.

Thanks. I will be comparing to mine when I'll be home next weekend. I also have the titanium from JG.

If you put paint on it, you may end up with a bump where the paint is. Cerakote is a very thin coating. I would call century and let them know, or whoever you bought it from. If you didn't know, you can refuse to accept the gun and send it back, then inform whoever you bought it from (jgsales, right?) why, and they'll send you another.

It's not that it's a bad thing.  You will never get the color tone right.  If a spot is bothering you now I don't think you we be satisfied with touch-up paint.  Besides the paint may come off with gun cleaners.

I was a professional gunsmith for two years and refinished in one way or another hundreds of guns.  I left gunsmithing because there was no money in it.  I was an employee and not the owner of the shop.  Anyway, I went back to my insurance job where I could make more money and support my family.  After a year of leaving gunsmithing I decided to turn part of my garage into a little gunsmithing shop where I can among other things refinish guns.  I'm now set up to parkerize and paint (Gunkote) guns.  I refinish my own guns as well as friends.  My point is, I've been down that road many times that you are on regarding trying to touch-up guns.  In my opinion, forget about the 1mm spot and enjoy the pistol.  If you carry the gun at all you will have all kinds of finish wear in no time.

I proper thickness of paint would be .0003" to .0004".

Good point. I may make "the spot" even more noticeable. I did see it at my FFL but I guess I presumed it was a proof mark of some kind. Technically, once you sign the paperwork and accept the gun, the seller (J&G Sales in this case) if off the hook.

Actually, weighing two pounds, I was just planning on this being a range/competition gun that I wanted to look good. I really like the titanium finish. I purposefully didn't get the chrome model because I heard it eventually chips off. Ironic, huh? Also, that model doesn't come with cerakote. All the other finishes do.
Main reason I got this gun is to shoot. Second was to look good and show it off. All my other pistols are black with the exception of an OD green Glock 19. And you know, it's a Glock. Not the prettiest in the world.

There is no "chrome" model anymore for the stingray, I believe. The Original finish was "Hard Chrome", which is what I have, but when they went to the black barrel and "Titanium" finish, that replaced the hard chrome, and is now Cerakoted. At least, that's the impression I was under.

Yes. It was the hard chrome models I heard eventually start chipping. Just like the old hard chrome HK P7s that needed to be refinished. Notice anything on yours yet?

Some wear under the right side safety/slide release controls (weird), but not much otherwise. Nothing in the slide rails or on the slide.

Where you have metal to metal contact the hard chrome will wear in time (like between the slide and frame rails).
