Hearing Protection
« on: May 26, 2014, 03:56:19 AM »
Right now at the range I just use some non-electric muffs with foam plugs under them. Pretty good setup but it's almost impossible to hear someone talking. Went to Sportsmans and got some electric amplifying muffs, very disappointed. Returned those. Now I'm reading up and have read great reviews on the Howard Leight Sport Tactical. Anyone use these?

If not, what method of hearing protection do you guys use?

I use the Combat Arms Ear Plugs, I wear glasses with shooting glasses over them...so ear muffs are really uncomfortable over them. These are comfortable and give good protection and still allow conversation.

Been using Pro Ears for over 10 years.  During a class a friend and I swapped ear pro (he had the HL), and he liked the Pro Ears much better as they did not cut out like the HLs when shots are fired.

The Brownells labeled ear pro is made by Altus, who is the maker of the Pro Ears brand.  I let my friends know, 4 of them have the Brownells and a 5th bought Pro Ears.  All of them are happy with their purchase.

I also use the Sure-Fire Ear Pro's for work and if I need to double up in the indoor range.  I use these when riding my motorcycle as well.

Jason,

Those are the ones I've been using for 2 years.  And I am using the method you spoke of:

I use these in my ears:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008MCTTIW/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and they are very comfortable.

And the Howard Leight Impact Sport over top of them.  I turn the dial almost all the way up, and I can hear conversations fine.  At the same time, gun shot noise is greatly reduced.  As a matter of fact if I forget to put in either one of the two, I noticed a big increase in gun shot noise level.

I've had the Howard Leight's for 2 years, shoot weekly, and have to change the batteries about every 3 to 4 months, I'm guessing.

I've used Peltor's "Tactical" model for years. Blocks nasty noises, but has the ability to amplify conversation and ambient sounds if you turn the little dial.

Best firearms accessory that I own.

I have a sibling that works in the R&D n Honeywell, they bought out Sperian, formerly Howard Leight.
They have some nice quality muffs. But the choice protection electronic de/amplification pads are the Howard Leight "Impact sport". I use them and boy oh boy, they are the best.

I have used the Impact Sports,  but not fully happy with them.   They don't seal as well as others and interfere with the cheek weld with rifle or shotgun.
This is qualified by my hearing loss.  I need more amplification in the safe frequency ranges than these can provide.
A relative cheap pair of Caldwell muffs works better than the H.L. Impact Sports  for me for both hearing,  seal and rifle use..

I use the Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs cranked up with inner ear plugs.  I can actually hear better with the HL and plugs than I can with no protection at all.

The only thing I will say about the Howard Leight is that there is a trick to getting them to fit your head.  Once you get it mastered, I don't believe there is a better pair of muffs for the price.  I liked them so much that I bought a second pair.

Yep, those Howard Leight are the ones I was talking about. Went to Sportsmans Warehouse and picked a set up, feel very good and the amplification is great.

I've been using the Howard Leight Impact Pro muffs. They've gone up quite a bit in price lately, but are excellent. However, I still double up by wearing ear inserts under the muffs. Here is the link for the HLs:
