The factory epoxy coatings (I think that's what they are) seem pretty durable. I suspect that the numerous reports of small chips are not actually due to a lack of durability, but simply factory flaws. Small spots that got an errant bit of machine oil or some other contaminent on them prior to the coating being applied.
Being the only person (that I've seen) to try and strip/polish one of the alloy frames, I can attest...that stuff does NOT like to come off. The yellow underneath is some kind of etching, assumably to make the coating stick.
